Warning: This Article includes Spoilers from the movie Eternals.
Eternals is a new storyline of superheroes introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eternals are the cosmic being who have protected the plated Earth from Deviants for thousands of years. After their fight with Deviants were over, the Eternals were commanded to start their lives on Earth as a regular human being.
Eternals is the twenty-sixth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe directed by Chloé Zhao and released in November 2021. Eternals, a team of cosmic beings, include ten new superheroes which are Ajak (Salma Hayek), Sersi (Gamma Chen), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), Gilgamesh (Don Lee) and Thena (Angelina Jolie).
Apart from the team of Eternals, another character was introduced in the starting, a human being named Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), who fell in love with Sersi. Dane, a mortal human being and Sersi, an Eternal, got into a relationship, and their moments were witnessed at the beginning and end of the movie.
Eternals movie is not only introducing Eternals in the MCU but also responsible for setting up other important characters in the MCU. In one of the post-credits scenes, Eros, Thanos’ brother, was shown contacting Makkari, Thena and Druig.
In the other post-credits scene, Dane Whitman was shown opening a box with his family crest on it, which included the Ebony Blade, which will make him the Black Knight from the Marvel Comics. Along with Dane Whitman, an off-screen voice was heard asking Dane whether he was ready for it or not?; the voice was of Mahershala Ali, aka Blade.
Although the role of Kit Harington as Dane Whitman had a small role to play in Eternals movie, MCU is setting up a big future project which might include the journey of Dane Whitman becoming the Black Knight he is destined to be.
Dane Whitman was given a piece of advice from Sersi that he should sort things out with his uncle, as Sersi knew the world was possible coming to an end. However, Sersi saved the planet Earth and afterwards, when she came back to Dane Whitman, Dane was about to tell her secret family history, which he got to know from his uncle. But in between, they were interrupted when Sersi was taken by Arishem, the Prime Celestial Being, which motivated Dane Whitman to open the box of his family crest and use the sword to save Sersi.
In the second post-credits scene, including Mahershala Ali’s voice cameo, fans are pondering upon the questions about the connection between the Blade and the Black Knight hinted in the Eternals movie. There is a high possibility of future projects of MCU, including Black Knight, Dane Whitman and Blade appearing together.
Why does Blade talk to Dane Whitman, aka Black Knight in Eternals’ Post Credits Scene?
The decision made by Dane Whitman to use the Ebony Blade in the post-credits scene of the Eternals and will become the Black Knight will become a big moment in the MCU future, Black Knight movie. However, the off-screen voice of Mahershala Ali, Blade, is questioning Dane Whitman whether he is ready for it?
The Blade is a Marvel Comics character who has superhuman strength and is able to deal with the supernatural and mystical side of the Marvel Universe. This is the reason why Blade is contacting Dane Whitman before he becomes Black Knight. It was not clear in the movie whether Blade is in the same room with Dane Whitman or he is talking to him through other means.
Blade’s human name is Eric Brooks, who is trying to beware Dane Whitman of using Ebony Blade as the description written on the box, ‘Death Is His Reward,’ gives a hint that using that sword will succumb the person to its’ violence.
Blade warning Dane Whitman about Ebony Blade gives a sign that Blade is already aware of Ebony Blade and its powers. The Blade is one of the most skilled swordsmen in the Marvel Universe, which makes it obvious that Blade has the knowledge of Dane Whitman’s Ebony Blade, a new weapon.
It is a high possibility that Blade came in contact with one of the family members of Dane’s family who has used the Ebony Blade for various dark purposes. Knowing the results of using Ebony Blade, Blade explains why he came to warn Dane Whitman in the post-credits scene of Eternals.
History of Blade & Black Knight – Marvel Comics
The Blade talking at the end of Eternals to Dane Whitman will probably become the biggest surprise to the audience and diehard Marvel fans because these two of them doesn’t have a strong connection between them in Marvel Comics. This can become one of the classic examples of how Marvel Cinematic Universe adapts major characters in new and unique ways to fit the shared Universe.
However, one connection between Marvel Black Knight and Blade Comics is that both of them are members of MI13, which Captain Britain leads. As Blade is from the UK in the Comics, he was called up to work with the team to solve the Secret Invasion. Blade and Black Knight’s time together didn’t last long as Blade tried to kill one of the members of MI13.
In Marvel Comics, Blade and Black Knight were not together for a very long time, but they both were present in the other superhero teams comics. Their crossovers in the comics are not really thrilling, but their encounter in the MCU can influence their time as Avengers.
In Marvel Comics history, both Blade and Black Knight were the members of Avengers, and once Blade became the leader of Avengers. However, Blade never officially served as Avenger, but Marvel Cinematic Universe can change that. In the recent premiere, both Blade and Black Knight are crossing paths that can indicate their strong connection in the MCU future movies.
What Eternals is Setting up MCU’s Future of Blade & Black Knight?
The Eternals post-credits scene hinting at a connection between Blade and Black Knight gives us numerous possibilities of both of their future appearances in MCU. It looks like Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, aka Black Knight, will be witnessing Mahershala Ali’s Blade on the screen alongside him.
Another possibility is that Blade and Black Knight could appear in other projects like Moon Knight or Marvel’s Halloween Special for Disney+ centred around Warewolf by Night. If any of that didn’t happen, there is always a possibility that Marvel could create a Black Knight Disney+ show or film casting Mahershala Ali as Blade and Kit Harington as Black Knight in it. At the least possible, both of them could appear as part of the Avengers 5 team with other MCU characters.
Regardless of where Blade and Black Knight will be shown in the MCU, their introduction in the Eternals can start a possibility of Marvel Studios starting the formation of MI13. The multiverse Phase 4 has continued to be explored in detail; however, the UK area is still haven’t been touched a lot. Blade and Black Knight could become the first British superheroes joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opening the doors for others.
Additionally, one project of MCU can position Black Knight with Midnight Sons, the biggest supernatural teams that will use superheroes like Blade, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Elsa Bloodstone, and many more. However, the Black Knight is not associated with Midnight Sons in Marvel Comics, but MCU can easily change that.
With so many possibilities of Blade and Black Knight coming together in the future MCU projects, the fans are thrilled and eager to see both of them side-by-side in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
