The reason of recast Teron for Taylor-Joy: Mad Max director answered

Director George Miller explains why Charlize Theron was replaced with Anya Taylor-Joy for the role of Furiosa in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”. Theron portrayed the wasteland warrior in 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road”, cementing the character as an iconic hero. However, rather than using de-aging technology to retain Theron for the prequel focusing on Furiosa’s origins, Miller opted to cast the younger Taylor-Joy.

While replacing such a prominent star carried risks, Miller justified the decision by expressing his aversion to the aesthetics of de-aging. He was concerned that employing this technology might distract viewers from the story. Miller elaborated on his choice of Taylor-Joy, influenced in part by a recommendation from director Edgar Wright. In his interview with Empire, Miller stated:

“It definitely would have been Charlize [for an earlier film]. As time went on, I began thinking, ‘Oh, maybe we could do de-aging.’ Then I watched masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, doing Gemini Man and The Irishman, and I saw that it hadn’t been perfected. All you’d be watching is, ‘Look how well the technology works?’ It would not have been persuasive.”

“Ultimately, it’s an intuitive response. There’s an innately resolute quality in [Taylor-Joy]. She’s a very determined and rigorous person. She has a mystique about her. And she’d been trained young as a ballet dancer. Charlize trained young as a ballet dancer. There’s a precision to them that was needed.”

Theron’s portrayal of Furiosa was undeniably powerful, embodying the fury implied in the film’s title. While revisiting Theron’s performance might have pleased fans, Miller was wary of the potential pitfalls of de-aging technology, drawing parallels to its utilization in Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Lee’s “Gemini Man”. In both cases, the focus on the technology overshadowed the narrative. Miller aimed to avoid such distractions by opting for a recast, entrusting Taylor-Joy to bring her intensity to the role. So far, glimpses of Taylor-Joy’s portrayal suggest she is poised to deliver a ferocity that rivals Theron’s, potentially establishing her iconic rendition of Furiosa.

Who will cast the new Immortan Joe?

Living up to a name like Immortan Joe is no easy feat, but the villain in Mad Max: Fury Road accomplished just that. He commanded attention in the Wasteland, ruling over his War Boys with an iron grip and delivering memorable put-downs like “Mediocre!” with gusto. Now, prepare for another ride into chaos – Immortan Joe returns in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, ready to unleash more vehicular mayhem. However, the question remained: who would don the plastic-abs bodysuit and fearsome breathing mask this time around, especially after the legendary Hugh Keays-Byrne, who portrayed the character in Fury Road, passed away in 2020?

This role in Furiosa will be taken on by Lachy Hulme – a close associate of filmmaker George Miller, who also serves double duty in the prequel. Initially cast as Rizzdale Pell, a member of Chris Hemsworth’s gang, Hulme approached Miller about the plans for Immortan Joe. “I’ll probably just get a body double,” Miller had said. To which Hulme responded, “Someone needs to honor this great man. I can do it. I can do the voice. And it’s all in the eyes.” Hulme’s portrayal of Immortan Joe was confirmed after filming had commenced, adding to his responsibilities as Rizzdale Pell. “Do you want to do it?” Miller asked. “What took you so long?” Hulme replied. “You’ve finally figured out that this movie ain’t gonna make dollar one until you’ve got double Lachy Hulme in it!”

Stepping into Immortan Joe’s shoes for Furiosa meant embracing even more chaotic action for Hulme. He describes the film as “David Lean but with motorbikes instead of camels. When you see 4,000 custom-made motorbikes come over a hill, you shit your pants.” It sounds like Furiosa is poised to deliver anything but a mediocre experience.
