Zack Snyder to Make a Splash at the End of 2023 and into 2024

Zack Snyder has become somewhat of a cult hero in geekdom. Long praised for his exciting and distinct moviemaking style, he was even able to be removed from the blame for the floundering DCEU. Famously, fans craved The Snyder Cut of The Justice League, and while it certainly wasn’t perfect, it was at least better.

Since cutting ties with the DCEU, which he was originally orchestrating, Snyder’s been pumping out the projects. In 2021, he made his comeback with Army of the Dead, and at the end of 2023, Snyder fans will be buzzing for the start of his own sci-fi universe. After that, he’ll be delving back into zombies and his much-loved ancient world.

It’s Star Wars, but Snyder-y

Arriving on December 22 – on Netflix, so it’s not a bizarre theatrical release date – Snyder’s next big movie outing will be Rebel Moon. Part one of the series, the epic space opera boasts a formidable cast that includes Sofia Boutella (Hotel Artemis), Charlie Hunnam (The Gentlemen), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Ed Skrein (Deadpool, and the same character as Huisman in Game of Thrones), and Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs).

Originally, Snyder conceived the premise of Rebel Moon as a part of George Lucas’ Star Wars galaxy. Unfortunately, the rights to the movies shifted from Lucasfilm to Disney, but it did allow Snyder to sit on the idea and make it entirely his own. As the title suggests, the focus is on Kora raising a rebellion against her former organization, the corrupt government of the Mother World. Interestingly, the film will be released as a PG-13, but will also have an extended R-rated cut – as they love those Snyder cuts.

A return to the ancient world

Arguably, Snyder’s big break came in the form of 300 – the story set in ancient Greece with lots of slow motion – and then he turned his eye to our modern mythology: superheroes. Watchmen, Man of Steel, and Dawn of Justice all drew from popular superhero comics to help fuel the fad that continues to grip the box office schedule. Of course, both superheroes and the ancient world are incredibly popular themes.

While superheroes dominate the cinema, ancient mythologies are often left to gaming. On consoles, we have the long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise, the superb God of War games, everywhere that Lara Croft explores, and the Total War series. Equally, in the extensive world of slots for real money, mythologies and ancient worlds take precedence. Loch Ness Loot, Zhanshi, Asgard, and Gods of Nature are just the most popular of the range.

So, fans of Snyder and just entertainment in general will be happy to know that he has a Norse mythology project in the works. The 2D animated series Twilight of the Gods boasts a tremendous voice cast of Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead), Paterson Joseph (Peep Show), Corey Stoll (Billions), Jamie Chung (Lovecraft Country), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), Jessica Henwick (Blood of Zeus), and Peter Stormare (Fargo).

As well as Rebel Moon and Twilight of the Gods, both of which will debut on Netflix, Snyder is also working on an Army of the Dead series. So, 2023 and 2024 look set to be great for Snyder’s grand following.
