Mashiro No Oto Season 2: Renewed or Cancelled [2023 Update]

Mashiro No Oto Season 2, will it ever happen?

Musical animes are unique in their regard, especially if you are a melomaniac who cannot conceive a world without it.

Even if you are not an avid music fan, musical animes can find a way to your heartstrings and inspire you to pick an instrument or two.

While music is often the theme of these animes, the plotlines can be progressed by combining with other genres like slice of life, romance, and even comedy.

Spring 2021 was privy to one such series as the anime adaption of Marimo Ragawa s’ manga series, Mashiro No Oto or Those Snow White Notes, hit the small screens.

The plot follows teenager Setsu Sawamura and his elder brother Wakana who had been raised by his grandfather, Matsugorou.

In his time, Matsugorouwas considered one of the greatest players of the shamisen, and since childhood, the siblings have grown up listening and learning the instrument.

When Matsugorou passed away, Setsu, not knowing what to do, decided to drop out of school to pursue his passion for playing the shamisen.

His grandfather told Setsu not to imitate others and should find a playing style suited to his way.

Grieving from the loss, Setsu heads to Tokyo but gets drowned by the sounds of city life and thinks of quitting playing the instrument.

Setsu s’ well-off mother waltzes back into his life and enrolls him in the Umezono Academy, where he meets a girl, Shuri Maeda, who is fascinated by the shamisen.

She wishes for Setsu to perform her grandmother and even starts an appreciation club which would allow him to teach other students about the shamisen.

Can Setsu recover his lost love for shamisen and discover his own unique sound is the central plot of the show.

Production studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal.

Financially, the anime boosted sales of a few of its volumes which managed to cross 100k copies and were ranked in the Top 10 of Amazon and Oricon Sales Chart.

However, the manga came to an end in August 2022, with Volume 31 being the final issue which could also be the point of consideration for creators to produce the second season.

As mentioned earlier, Mashiro No Oto Season One was well received by the fandom, further evidenced by its IMDB user episode ratings.

While the reviews, ratings, and profits are favorable, a crucial factor for renewal will be the availability of studio and source material.

Studio Shin-Ei Animation is one of the oldest production houses and has been in the industry for the past 46 years.

Currently, only two projects, i.e., The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic (2024) and Mr. Villians s’ Day Off (TBA), are listed as part of the production schedule.

However, since the turn of the decade, studio Shin-Ei Animation is yet to produce a sequel which could spell bad news for fans hoping for Mashiro No Oto Season 2.

The good news is there are more than 20 volumes available for creators to produce Mashiro No Oto Season 2.

All in All, if the studio is financially motivated by the sales numbers and has staff available, Mashiro No Oto Season 2 could happen.

The latest we can expect some announcements on Mashiro No Oto Season 2 trailer and Mashiro No Oto Season 2 release date would be by 2024.

In the final episode of Mashiro No Oto season one, “Those Snow White Notes,” Setsu shows his playing style after a change mid-performance, bringing about massive applause from the group.

After a couple of follow-up performances, Souichi goes in front of an audience and plays out his tune impeccably, earning another round of applause.

Following the judge s’ assessment of the performances, Setsu comes in third position while Souichi wins the competition.

Umeko presents Setsu with his trophy, but before he gets it, she drops and breaks the prize. She tells him how disappointing it was for her not to see him play Matsugorou’s style.

As criticism heaps on Ryuugen and Seiryuu, Setsu leaves the event feeling completely drained.

Setsu goes on to skip the next several days of school afterward as he reflects and debates on the playing style he wants to pursue.

Mashiro No Oto Season One covered the first eight volumes of the manga, which means Mashiro No Oto Season 2 will begin by adapting Volume 9.

After losing to Soichi Tanuma at the Matsugoro Cup, Setsu realizes his ambitions as a shamisen player, deepening his resolve to quit high school.
