Robert Downey jr’s Iron man is one of the most popular and loved superheroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, in an interview with the late Stan Lee, he admitted that he created Tony Stark’s Iron Man to be a challenge. He wanted Iron man’s character to accomplish the journey from being the most unlikeable character to a likeable personality.
Tony Stark was a challenge for Stan lee
While promoting Iron man (2008), Stan Lee confessed in an interview that he challenged himself in the 1960s to make a character that the readers would despise, resulting in the development of Iron man.
Iron man made his debut in Marvel Comics in Tales of suspense #39. He was introduced as a billionaire weapons dealer who went on a journey of becoming a hero. After being captured, Tony created his armour to escape from his kidnappers.
Tony Stark’s Journey from a selfish billionaire businessman to a superhero
Initially, Tony Stark was a self-centred businessman who sold awfully dangerous weapons to anyone who paid a good price for them without caring that his weapons may end up in the wrong hands.
Tony stark wasn’t someone with whom the readers were attached or had a connection given his selfishness and rudeness. But as time passed, his character evolved and became one of the most loved characters of Marvel Comics. The symbol became even more popular and beloved when it was brought to life on the big screens by Robert Downey Jr in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why did Stan Lee want Tony Stark’s Iron Man to be unlikeable?
In an interview from 2013, Stan Lee admitted that he intentionally made Tony Stark obnoxious and unlikeable as a challenge to himself to make readers grow attached to someone who wasn’t your basic good guy/superhero.
Stand lee said when he created iron man the readers were Not exactly a fan of war and military because of the Cold War. But Stan Lee made a hero who represented flaws and everything bad about wars. He said he threw Tony Stark in the reader’s way and gave them no option but to like him. Luckily it worked.
Over the years, Tony Stark’s iron man has evolved so much, and what made his character legendary was his redemption. While he had his flaws and struggled with his insecurities, he has come a long way. Tony Stark is not the selfish billionaire he once was. Even though he is still a billionaire, but he is kind and thinks about others around him. he has tried to make things right both in the comics and the MCU.
It’s worth praising that Stan lee dared to make a character unlikeable intentionally, but now we know that the late marvel icon knew better as Tony Stark has become the greatest hero in the MCU. Tony Stark’s Iron man is probably the most popular avenger and superhero in the Marvel Universe, thanks to Stan Lee, who took such a big risk.
