So whether you sign up for a genetic service, or try a niche resource, you’ll have no problem connecting. When you get to the stage of arranging a get-together, here are our top five suggestions for the best movies based on comics.

Wonder Woman

Starring Israeli-born model Gal Gadot in the titular role, Wonder Woman is one of the most popular DC characters of all. In this spirited reimagining, we get a glimpse of the heroine’s past, raised on the hidden island of Themyscira, home of the feisty female warriors the Amazons, tasked by the ancient Olympian Gods to defend humanity. We fast-forward to 1918, when the Amazons are pitted against the Germans on the verge of defeat in World War One, but who are experimenting with a lethal form of mustard gas to alter the course of the war. With non-stop action, and chemistry between the lead characters, this would be a memorable film to start your date.

Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad are a bunch of criminals recruited by a clandestine government agency and tasked with undertaking various operations aimed at saving the world. In return, their sentences will be reduced. Amongst the supervillains-turned-good guys are The Joker (Jared Letto), Batman’s arch-nemesis, and Harley Quinn, a former psychiatrist seduced by The Joker and now ‘mad, literally mad, about him.’ Deadshot (Will Smith) leads a double-life. By day he is an expert marksman and ruthless assassin. But he is also a proud father who wants to do the best for his young daughter. The ensemble cast will have you rooting for this squad of misfits.

Aquaman

Starring the muscular and brooding Jason Momoa, familiar to Games of Thrones fans as the leader of the nomadic Dothraki, Aquaman is a superb underwater yarn. The titular hero must stop his evil half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) from uniting the seven undersea kingdoms and destroying the surface world. Featuring a stellar cast, including Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and Amber Heard, this went on to become the fifth-highest-grossing movie of 2018, and indeed, the 20th-highest since records began! A sequel is already planned, but this version is a white-knuckle ride you’re sure to enjoy.

Joker

There have been many versions featuring Batman’s arch-enemy, but this one sets out to reveal the real back story to this troubled character. Played by Joaquin Phoenix, we see the descent into murderous madness by a failed clown and stand-up comic. This dark story became the first R-rated movie to gross over $1 billion at the box office, and Phoenix’s visceral portrayal earned him the Best Actor Award at the 2019 Academy awards.

Shazam!

After the urban horror of Joker, perhaps your final choice should offer you and your partner the opportunity to wind down. An ancient wizard, Shazam, chooses a new champion, teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who transforms into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) simply by saying the name ‘Shazam!’ What does anyone do once they’re gifted superpowers in the DC universe? They set about saving the world from a megalomaniac villain, in this case, Dr Thaddues Sivana (Mark Strong). A box office success, its light tone and madcap adventure would make for the perfect climax to your date night.
