Avengers Director Joe Russo Likes Indian Cinema and Wants to Promote it Globally
According to Joe Russo, Hollywood should endorse other film industries, such as Indian cinema, to expand its audience. He specifically praised the story and visual effects of the movie RRR as a means of attracting global viewership.
Joe Russo, along with his brother Anthony Russo, is a well-known director who has directed several big-budget Hollywood movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and The Gray Man.
They were also invited to participate in the Sands International Film Festival in Scotland where they talked about their upcoming series Citadel, which features Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden, and shared details about their other upcoming projects. He emphasized the importance of supporting film industries worldwide, including Bollywood, to help them gain a larger audience.
He specifically mentioned SS Rajamouli’s RRR for generating excitement among moviegoers with its storytelling on a global scale. The Telugu hit song Naatu Naatu was awarded the Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.
The television series Citadel from Prime Video is set to be adapted for Italian and Indian audiences. Raj and DK, the filmmaking duo, will direct the Indian version of Citadel, featuring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu as the lead actors. The original series is set to release on April 28, but the Indian adaptation is currently being filmed.
When questioned about his vision for the ideal Hollywood, Joe Russo responded that it should be more global and cited Bollywood as an exemplar. He remarked to the Hollywood trade publication Deadline, “It should be more diverse and international. Bollywood, for instance, is a major player in the film industry on a global scale, but its visibility outside of India is minimal.”
Praise is given to movies such as RRR, which utilize exceptional technical skills, visual effects, and storytelling centered around myths to attract a more extensive viewership. Such films can educate us about diverse cultures.
Therefore, our objective should be to enable other markets to promote their stories more extensively. We aim to support other industries as much as possible so their tales can reach a broader audience.
Joe Russo has previously collaborated with Indian performers in Extraction and The Gray Man movies. Randeep Hooda, Pankaj Tripathi, and Priyanshu Painyuli appeared in the former, while the latter featured Tamil actor Dhanush in a leading role. The directors have also suggested that Dhanush’s character, a hitman named Avik San, may reappear in the sequel to The Gray Man.
