Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 6: Genya s’ Emotional Backstory
Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 6 explored Genya s’ darkest memory!
Demon Slayer has been the talk of the town, and it is not a surprise that there is some or other aspect of it trending each week.
This week s’ episode titled ‘Aren’t You Going to Become a Hashira?’ was an emotional trip back memory lane for Genya as he struggles to contemplate his past.
So, let’s get going and find out what went down in Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 6.
GENYA S’ TRANSFORMATIONS SHOCKS TANJIRO
In the previous episode, we saw severing the necks of Kakuro, Urogi, and Sekido using a new Sun Breathing technique called Solar Halo Dragon Dance.
Despite the epic attack, the three demons aren’t dead but are in agony over the inability to regenerate from the heavy damage.
Genya also decapitated Aizetsu, but in the process, he was turned into a demon, leaving Tanjiro dumbstruck.
Genya, in response, grabs his throat and rebukes him not to get cocky as he will be the one to kill the Upper-Rank Demon.
He also reminds us that his assistance with the Upper Six is why he has yet to become a Hashira.Instead of rebelling, Tanjiro acknowledges Genya s’ resolve and supports him in his cause.
Genya refuses to believe him and thinks Tanjiro is getting him to lower his alertness, only to see his brightly shining eyes and realize he is being honest.
A FIFTH MANIFESTATION APPEARS
After freeing Nezuko from the debris, Tanjiro deduces that cutting all four manifestations will not kill Hantengu, and a fifth demon is hiding somewhere.
Tanjiro asks Genya to engage the three regenerated demons and Nezuko as he searches for the fifth one.
Karaku launches a wind blast in the direction of Tanjiro, but Nezuko intervenes in the attack, which incidentally clears the air for Tanjiro to smell better.
He concentrates his smelling ability and locates the fifth demon hiding in the bushes in the nearby forest.
It is revealed the fifth manifestation is Hantengu itself, who appears extremely small, scared, and frightened.
DEMONS FIGHT BACK
Tanjiro runs towards the forest and asks Nezuko to assist Genya as she stops Sekido s’ lightning.
Sekido orders Urogi to stop Tanjiro, who faces Tanjiro, but the demon slayer asks Genya to search for a hidden demon by heading northeast into the forest.
Urogi sends Tanjiro flying using his wind attack, but the latter anchors himself using a tree stump.
Sekido prepares to summon his lightning, but Nezuko intervenes; however, this time, she gets impaled by Aizetsu s’ yari.
GYOKKO ENJOYS HIS ART
The scene shifts to the Mist Hashira, who has been trapped by Gyokko in his Water prison. Muichiro is also pierced through the fish demon s’ needles which are slowly causing paralysis.
The demon slayer tries to escape the prison, but his efforts are unsuccessful. Seeing his sufferings, Gyokko praises himself for his creativity which seems to improve at every sight.
TANJIRO GETS A POWERUP
Aizetsu has Nezuko impaled and asks Sekido to shock her, but before he can proceed, his hands are severed by Tanjiro s’ red blade.
Sekido notes Tanjiro s’ increase in speed and power, which has also become stronger than what Muzan had described.
Tanjiro slices Urogi s’ right wing and mouth while Nezuko tackles Aizetsu through his shaft and sets him ablaze.
Tanjiro tries to slice Karaku, but the demon of pleasure pins him down using his gust of wind. Karaku tries to locate Genya; however, his arms are chopped unexpectedly by Tanjiro, who asks Genya to head right and south.
HANTENGU ON THE RUN
Genya rushes through the forest but struggles to locate the demon as Tanjiro yells to move to the right and search on the ground.
Finally, Genya locates Hantengu hiding behind a bush and is shocked to see his size, which is similar to a small mouse.
Hantengu s’ diminutive appearance is akin to his character, i.e., coward, as the fifth manifestation makes a run.
Genya chases after the demon and tries to sever his neck, but his blade snaps into two. He follows it by firing two bullets from his shotgun; however, Hantengu is unscathed, which leaves Genya shocked by his durability.
Unexpectedly, Sekido arrives at Genya s’ back, prepared to stab him with his khakkhara. Time freezes as Genya senses he can’t dodge the incoming attack and begins to think about his elder brother, Sanemi.
GENYA S’ PAST
Genya s’ memories begin with his mother, Shizu Shinazugawa, who he describes as a petit woman tirelessly working from day to night.
He remembers his father, who was much bigger than his mother and used to abuse her constantly.
Genya s’ father often would use his size to torment him and his siblings, which led Genya to loathe him. Despite her stature, Genya s’ mother always protected her children.
One night, Genya finds sleep hard to come by as he wonders why her mother has not come home. His elder brother Sanemi Shinazugawa is also unable to sleep and decides to go find her.
Genya wishes to tag along, but Sanemi asks him to stay with the siblings and ease their concerns.
Several hours pass, but neither her mother nor her elder has returned. Suddenly a loud banging noise comes from the door as a strange apparition stands behind the window.
Assuming it’s their mother, all the younger siblings rush to greet her, but Genya warns them not to open the door as it might be someone else.
As soon as the door opens, a monstrous figure speeds into the house and kills all four siblings. It slashes Genya s’s face and shatters the ceiling lamp, leading to a complete blackout.
Thinking it is a stray dog or wolf, Genya rushes out of the house and is tackled by Sanemi, who later disappears. Genya urges her siblings to hold the wounds as he gets a doctor.
As the sun rises, Genya reaches the end of the street, where he finds Sanemi covered in blood and staring at the disintegrating body of her mother.
Genya embraces her dying body and accuses an expressionless Sanemi of killing their mother.
GENYA CONTEMPLATES HIS ACCUSATION
Back in the present, Genya recalls his harsh words to his brother while remembering the cold bodies of his dead siblings. He also apologizes to Sanemi as what he thought could be a wolf was, in fact, his mother, who had turned into a demon.
He thinks about how much suffering and pain Sanemi would have endured that night to fight and kills his mother.
Genya also remembers Sanemi s’ words about protecting the family now that their father has died. He remarked that now did not matter since they had always done so, causing Sanemi to smile.
In another instance, Genya thinks back to when Sanemi insulted him for never being able to make it to the Demon Slayer Corps and how he should quit.
Due to his inability to use breathing techniques, Genya denounces himself talentless as he can never become a Hashira.
TANJIRO S’ ENCOURGEMENT TO GENYA
As Sekido s’ staff approaches Genya s’ neck, Tanjiro demands he not give up, which helps Genya to wake up and avoid the attack.
Tanjiro reminds Genya of his desire to become a Hashira and why he should not give up chasing his dream.
Aizetsu arrives at the scene and fires projections using Weeping Spears at Tanjiro, who is surprised to see himself unharmed.
He turns and sees Genya, who had taken all the brunt of the attack with numerous punctured wounds.
Genya concedes that he cannot behead the fifth demon and asks Tanjiro to do it instead.
HANTENGU DEAD?
Genya blocks another attack from Aizetsu, which allows Tanjiro to run into the forest in search of the fifth demon.
The demon slayer finds Hantengu s’ location and catches it running away. Tanjiro gives chase and catches it in the open with no cover. He proceeds to swing his blade as it begins radiating with bright red light.
