Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, released on May 6th, 2022, is an American superhero movie based on Marvel Comics. Doctor Strange 2 focuses on the exploration of the multiverse where Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, are standing against each other. Along with the Avengers’ faceoff, this film features the debut of a new Marvel superhero, America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, who has the ability to travel through the multiverse by opening doors.

Doctor Strange 2 covers the travel of the multiverse, where Doctor Strange travels to Earth-838, the world very much unlike MCU. In that universe, Doctor Strange meets with the Illuminati, which is a group including all the powerful superheroes who protect their world from dangerous threats.

In that universe, Doctor Strange’s variant, named Baron Mordo, was shown, along with Richard Reeds, aka Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt of the Inhumans, and Captain Cater, a version of Monica Rambeau’s Captain Marvel and a variant of Charles Xavier, played by Patrick Stewart.

If we talk about Professor X’s variant, he looked like a more classic version from the X-Men: The Animated Series than any other version. However, the Illuminati were shown not being able to stand up against Scarlet Witch for long and barely slowed her down.

The Mutants came into MCU’s existence via a miniseries released on Disney+ named Loki. The miniseries of The God of Mischief, Loki, put together the worlds of Sorcerers Supreme and Avengers. In Doctor Strange 2, X-Men was slightly introduced in MCU, but the post-credits scenes officially hinted that the mutants on Earth-838 could enter the Earth-616.

In one of the post-credits scenes of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange unexpectedly met a woman who was from the Dark Dimension. The woman’s name was Clea, played by Charlize Theron, who in the comics is the greatest love of Doctor Strange. According to the post-credit scene, Clea mentions to Strange that he had unknowingly caused the ‘incursion’ and she is in need of his help to rectify it.

Doctor Strange casts a spell, opens his third eye and through Clea’s portal, goes into the Dark Dimension to help. Now the whole focus of MCU has been diverted to Clea and Dark Dimension, who will be becoming a very crucial characters in the future.

According to Doctor Strange 2, the ‘incursion’ only happens when a being from one timeline leaves too much of a ‘footprint’ in another timeline, which leads to the possibility of two timelines into a collision. An example of which was shown in Loki, which explains the fact that the multiverse looks like a tree, and each timeline is a different branch, but they do drive from one another. If they are overlapped or drive into one another, it is what is called ‘incursion.’

In Doctor Strange 2, the phenomenon of ‘incursion’ is said to be extremely unfortunate, as Doctor Strange entering another universe almost destroyed that universe as it got out of control.

However, to be back on the topic of Clea, she talked about universes involved in ‘incursion’ and needed Doctor Strange’s help. It is definite that Earth-616 is one of the universe involved in the ‘incursion’ as the variant of Doctor Strange of that universe was majorly involved in creating it.

A possibility is that Earth-838 can be the only universe in which things were changed as a result of Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch’s fight. Wanda Maximoff got hold of that universe’s Wanda and used herself as a means to kill many greatest superheroes, which would probably lead to a big effect on that universe’s future.

Mutants in MCU will become a hype for the fans, as the multiverse is crazier than shown in Doctor Strange 2. As many timelines are intersecting because of Doctor Strange’s events, anyone can jump between universes. The Earth-838 includes more superhumans than the mainstream MCU, and the Illuminati group involved Professor X, the leader of the mutants, and Black Bolt, the monarch of Inhumans. Due to this, any Inhuman or mutant can cross between the universes, which would lead to that being’s presence on Earth-616 without any warning.

The X-Men group always included time travelers, among which anyone can unintentionally enter another dimension as a consequence of an incursion. Nonetheless, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness set-ups Mutants for the MCU future.

There are infinite possibilities how with Doctor Strange 2 events, such as the Scarlet Witch, who was killed at the end, can come back, or whether or not the result of ‘incursion’ could lead to a permanent X-Men presence on Earth-616. However, Doctor Strange 2 post-credit scene does indicate that incursion can be ended, but there is no reason to assume everything will be the same after the incursion. One thing is for sure, X-Men’s future in the MCU has begun, and the great adventures, including mutants, are awaited.
