Emma Stone Considering Suing Disney Too? Here’s What Happened
After the recent news of Scarlett Johansson suing Disney over Black widow’s online release surfaced, now Emma Stone is also reportedly contemplating suing Disney over Cruella movie release on the online platform. Cruella was released on May 28, 2021, in theatres and on Disney plus simultaneously.
Cruella’s Disney+ Release: Why is Emma Stone Considering Suing Disney?
To watch the movie on the streaming platform, fans had to subscribe to the $29.99 premier access of Disney plus, like the rest of the movies, including Black Widow, Soul, and Mulan. While the movie received a positive reaction from the audiences and critics, it didn’t do exceptionally well at the box office. It is believed that the reason why Cruella’s box office numbers were low is its simultaneous release on Disney plus and in theatres.
Scarlett Johansson’s Lawsuit Changes The Future Of Hybrid Releases
Scarlett Johnson starrer Black Widow was one of the most awaited movies of this year, and it also had a hybrid release like Raya and the last dragon. Black Widow did a great job in terms of number, given the pandemic. However, the lead star of the movie, Scarlett Johansson, suffered a big loss because of this hybrid release. Due to this, she filed a lawsuit against Disney, claiming that the black widow’s release on Disney plus was a breach of her agreement with Marvel Studios.
According to Scarlett’s contract, her salary depended on the movie’s box office numbers which she believes was affected by the movie’s release on Disney plus. After Scarlett took a stand for herself, she was followed by a fellow actress and lead of the Cruella movie, Emma Stone.
Is The Walt Disney Studio In Trouble For Their Premier Access Plan?
This new information was revealed by former HR editor Matt Belloni, who took to his exclusive newsletter titled What I am hearing and reported that Emma Stone is also considering filing a lawsuit against Disney.
Matt also indicated that Scarlett Johansson has full support from her fellow artists, and this issue will not die down easily. However, Disney lawyers quickly responded to the lawsuit and claimed that they didn’t violate Scarlett’s contract in any manner. The studio also claimed that the actress’s salary wasn’t affected by the Disney plus release but instead increased.
Hopefully, some clarity on this latest controversy off Hollywood could come soon. Also, Scarlett Johnson is quite a popular and powerful figure from the industry. If she decided to take such strong action against the Disney studio, there’s definitely some ground to her charges.
Now that Emma Stone is also considering speaking out about Cruella, it could make things difficult for Disney. For now, not much has been revealed about this controversy. But one thing is for sure that this battle between the artists and Disney plus will decide the future of this new release trend in this pandemic. Hopefully, all will be revealed soon as the case proceeds in the Supreme Court. Till then, keep your eyes and ears open for any new updates.
