The show’s narrative revolves around the Locke family, who, following the murder of their father, Rendell Locke, relocate to his ancestral residence in Massachusetts.
Upon their arrival, they stumble upon a remarkable revelation: the house is brimming with enigmatic keys that might be related to their father’s death.

After a pandemic-related delay in production, Netflix extended the commitment to “Locke & Key” by ordering two consecutive seasons, the second and third, filmed in succession throughout a year, starting in September 2020.
However, in April 2022, the executive producers of the series, Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill, affirmed that the third season would conclude the Locke family’s narrative.
They explained that they had always envisioned a three-season arc as the ideal length to bring the Locke family’s adventures at Keyhouse to a satisfying conclusion.
“As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the chance to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s amazing story exactly the way we wanted,” they said in their own words. However, we’re retaining the magical keys for our use.
Locke & Key Season 4 Release Date
There is no information available about the release date of Locke & Key Season 4 because the series has concluded. The show wrapped up after its planned three seasons, according to the creators’ original intentions.
Showrunner Meredith Averill once mentioned, “We covered a significant part of the source material we used, as well as introduced our original ideas, and it felt like a logical conclusion for us to reach by the end of the third season.”
Even though Locke & Key won’t be returning for a fourth season, it’s good that it didn’t drag on excessively. Additionally, it’s uncommon for Netflix series to receive a proper conclusion, as many are abruptly canceled, leaving unresolved plotlines.

Will There Be a Locke & Key Movie or Spinoff?
Adapting Locke & Key Season 4 for a cinematic release would undeniably pose a significant challenge, given the story’s extensive and intricate nature. Nevertheless, ample source material is still available to explore if there are intentions to create a movie or reboot.
In 2021, a collaboration between IDW Publishing and DC resulted in a crossover project titled Locke & Key/Sandman: Hell and Gone, which brought together the worlds of The Sandman and Locke & Key.
With Neil Gaiman’s approval, this project involved Joe Hill (the writer of Locke & Key) and artist Gabriel Rodriguez. The narrative centers around one of the Locke family’s ancestors and their connection to Roderick Burgess, who imprisoned Morpheus for an important part of the 1900s.
Although completing a full-fledged onscreen crossover could be difficult, The Sandman’s first season had a surprisingly large number of linkages to the larger DC world. Therefore, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to subtly include some Easter eggs from Locke & Key Season 4 as well.
In an Entertainment Weekly interview discussing the original crossover, Rodriguez playfully suggested that the cameo appearance he and Hill made in season two should be expanded into its series:
