Netflix s “for age 14+ content” has recently seen a meteoric rise in quality and quantity. Ranging from Teen -Adventure, romance, drama or sci-fi, and other teenage-centric content has been bulk produced by the streaming site.
One of the most popular shows has been On My Block, which has completed four seasons.
On My Block is a Netflix teen comedy-drama created by Laureh Lungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft, follows four friends as they navigate high school and the challenges of growing up in south central Los Angeles.
Monse Finnie is the afro-Latina tomboy raised by a single father who acts as the group leader and is in love with her best friend, Cesar. Ruby Martinez is a math whiz Mexican who often is the voice of reason within the group.
Jamal Turner is the brainiac obsessed with finding a treasure at the RollerWorld.Cesar Diaz, despite being intelligent, is forced into gang life after his brother’s release hampering his relationship with Monse.
Set in rough neighborhoods where gangs and guns are a reality, the show doesn’t shy away from mature content Teens smoke pot, drink alcohol at parties, and participate in lewd conversations.
Despite the iffy stuff, these are delicate and deeply felt stories featuring smart and supportive characters plus great messages about friendship and inclusion.
It’s painfully realistic at times but also super sweet, as is the story of every coming-of-age story. The diversity of the cast plays a massive part in building the plotline and eventually showcasing the life of kids in south LA.
After the conclusion season 4, fans were wondering if and when the series would make a return with On My Block season 5. Sadly, before the release, it was already announced that the Netflix show would end after the fourth season.
For many fans who missed the announcement, it might be bittersweet as the series leaves behind a nostalgia of growing up. If you are wondering why the showrunners canceled On My Block season 5, will there be any spin-offs? Keep reading to find out.
IS ON MY BLOCK SEASON 5 CANCELLED?
The first season of On my Block was released on 16th March 2018 for ten episodes. On my Block season, two aired on 29th March 2019 for ten episodes. On my Block was renewed for a third season and premised on 11th March 2020 for eight episodes. Finally, the On My Block season came out on 4th October 2021 for the final ten episodes.
The official Netflix Twitter account confirmed the conclusion of the On my block series after the fourth season and also released its trailer, whose description read as “One last time around the Block.”
So, if you are hoping for updates like the On my block season 5 trailer and On My Block season 5 release date, it will be futile as the show is officially done.
WHY ON MY BLOCK SEASON 5 WON’T HAPPEN
The most credible reason for not renewing is plot-wise; there was nothing left to be explored as On My Block characters received a convincing end on my Block.
In the On My Block season 4, there were already rumors about a character’s death, as there weren’t any since the first season. The final season was, of course, going to be the culmination of the plotline, and one could not expect all endings to be sweet.
We start with Oscar, convinced of impending doom on Cesar and suggests he get away to Portland. But Cesar stoically denies it and stays put.
Later we find out that Cesar has been jailed, but Oscar bails him out, which angers Cesar. The gang decides Cesar isn’t fit to lead and asks him to step down as the ring leader.
Cesar finally realizes the danger to his life after getting cornered by another gang and agrees to move to Portland to stay alive.
Jasmine, Ruby, Jamal, and Sierra are going to prom, where the King and Queen will be decided. Unexpectedly, Ruby wins and dances with Jasmine on the stage. Cesar appreciates Jamal for trusting him, as he wouldn’t have made it without him.
The series finale was a perfect ending for each story arc despite the death of Oscar. All in all, on my Block is a series that teaches the importance of friendship and life experiences that eventually shape one’s personality in later years.
The contrasting upbringing and choices of the characters indicate mistakes that each of us makes and how sometimes we need a friendly hand to pull through tough times.
SUCCESS OF ON MY BLOCK
While storyline and characters arc is a huge factor in getting renewals, Netflix more often than not considers financial success and ratings before announcing future installments.
On My Block is rated 7.9/10 on IMDB and is 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Parrotanalytics, the show was rated 88.5% on comedy performance and received 2.6x weekly demand compared to other teen sitcoms.
On July 2019, according to a Hollywood reporter, the cast of the teen sitcom received a sizeable pay rise from $20,000 to $60,000 per episode. The show did well on the financial side for the actors to receive pay bumps.
