‘The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep’: Netflix New Anime Movie

According to reports, the working title for Netflix’s next anime movie, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, which is based in the Witcher universe, teases a sea of bizarre and fantastical creatures.

More information must be given regarding the upcoming anime film in The Witcher Netflix universe. The announcement was made in September 2021, but official updates have yet to be provided. However, a rumor was circulating that the film might be titled Sirens of the Deep. Today, we can confirm that this rumor is accurate and have additional details to share!

Following the impressive reception of The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf anime, Netflix is actively engaged in the production of another anime set in The Witcher universe.

This upcoming installment, titled The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, is based on a short story that was excluded from the first season of the main show. Here’s what we currently know about it.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is being developed and animated by the Korean studio Mir, known for their previous work on Nightmare of the Wolf and The Legend of Korra.

At this point, the specific writer and director for Sirens of the Deep have not been revealed, but Kwang Il Han, who directed Nightmare of the Wolf, may also be involved in this project.

The musical composition for The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep will be handled by Joseph Trapanese, known for his work on The Witcher and Shadow and Bone. Lauren Hissrich, the showrunner of The Witcher, will serve as an executive producer for this project.

In the previous year, Netflix and The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich announced a new anime project, but with limited information provided. Since then, there has been a need for more updates regarding the anime. However, a recent report has shed some light on the situation by revealing the film’s working title.

According to The Cosmic Circus, the anime film will be animated by Studio Mir, similar to its predecessor, and is being developed under the working title, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.

There are few additional details available, and Hissrich and Netflix have yet to indicate when further information about the project might be shared with audiences.

Sirens appear in The Witcher franchise, starting with CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There is a possibility of confusion between sirens and the merpeople depicted in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel, Sword of Destiny, specifically in the short story “A Little Sacrifice.”

Although both creatures are fond of singing, sirens are portrayed as more ferocious and less inclined to interact with humans. Regarding physical distinctions, sirens possess wings and can fly, while mermaids lack this capability.

The significance of this working title lies in the fact that it is among the few instances where Netflix’s Witcher franchise draws inspiration from top-rated video games. However, it remains to be seen whether the sirens featured in the anime film will resemble the monsters depicted by CD Projekt Red or the brilliant race portrayed in Sapkowski’s novels.

During Netflix’s TUDUM event in September 2021, Hissrich announced the upcoming anime film, a family-friendly Witcher project, and the third season of The Witcher.

This film will be the second anime installment in Netflix’s Witcher franchise, following The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The first anime film focused on Vesemir and the downfall of Kaer Morhen, the hidden fortress of the School of the Wolf.

It was released before the premiere of The Witcher Season 2, offering audiences a glimpse into the history of the locations before their live-action portrayal. The connection, if any, between Sirens of the Deep and the main Witcher series remains unknown.

What is certain is that Netflix is actively developing other aspects of the expanding franchise, including a fourth season of The Witcher. Director Stephen Surjik mentioned in an interview that the writers and producers had outlined the plans for Season 4. However, whether he is directly involved in that production phase is uncertain.

While the exact storyline of The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep has not been officially confirmed, it will likely draw inspiration from author Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story titled “A Little Sacrifice.

The first season of The Witcher series encompassed most of the short stories from Sapkowski’s two collections, with a few exceptions. “A Grain of Truth” was included in the first episode of Season 2, and now it seems that Sirens of the Deep will adapt “A Little Sacrifice,” leaving a few remaining short stories yet to be adopted.

“A Little Sacrifice” by Andrzej Sapkowski presents a dark and twisted rendition of the classic tale of “The Little Mermaid.” The story revolves around the ill-fated love between individuals from different species: Sh’eenaz, a mermaid, and Agloval, a human prince.

Agloval, the proud and arrogant ruler of the coastal realm of Bremervoord, finds himself deeply infatuated with Sh’eenaz. Seeking assistance, he hires Geralt, fluent in the Elder Language, as a translator.

Agloval intends to persuade Sh’eenaz to relinquish her mermaid form and trade her fin for human legs, abandoning her life in the sea to live with him on land. However, Sh’eenaz staunchly rejects the proposition and instead proposes that Agloval should be the one to join her in the underwater world, even though he cannot breathe underwater.
