The plot follows Amane Fujimiya, an average high schooler with a slobbish personality and no interest in looks and beauty. He is upfront, unapologetically honest, and always surveys the situation before acting. 

In contrast, Amane s’ neighbour Mahiru Shiina is the school s’ beauty queen and is not only popular but also an ideal student. Although Mahiru is the school’s angel, she spends most of her time withdrawn and hiding her feelings.

On a rainy day, Amane sees Mahiru sitting on a wet swing with a gloomy face betraying painful thoughts. Despite being neighbours and schoolmates, Amane has never spoken to Mahiru before and wonders whether he should offer an umbrella to the distressed girl.

Amane breaks character and leans his umbrella forward, but Mahiru wants to be left alone. Amane leaves the umbrella with her and returns home in the blithering rain.

On reaching, he finds Mahiru on the other side of the lift with the umbrella, waiting to return it to him. Amane, thoroughly wet and suffering from cold, gives the cold shoulder to Mahiru and returns to his apartment.

Mahiru offers to repay the favor by doing chores around the house for him and thus begins the strange friendship between the angel and Amane.

Two people with contrasting personalities, can they strike a friendship, and will this friendship blossom into love is the central plot of the series.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Light novel is written by Saekisan and illustrated by Hanekoto. Initially, the light novel began serialization on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in December 2018. Following this, the GA Bunko label acquired the series in June 2019. 

The light novel has been collected into eight volumes, with the latest issue coming out on 14th January 2023. 

According to Oricon, the fifth volume sold over 19,791 copies and was placed first in Weekly Light Novel sales. 

Volume 6 sold 19,262 copies in its first week and was ranked first in Light Novel Series Weekly sales between 16th May and 22nd May.

As of March 2023, the light novel was the Best-Selling Light Novel with 87,356 copies sold.
