Endgame’s Old Captain America Theory: Captain America Old Variant was a Skrull
In Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers’ character got its closure when he travelled to the past to return the Infinity Stones to their original places and then decided to stay in the past to spend some time with his ladylove. However, this whole scenario didn’t make much sense and raised many questions. Old Captain America returned to the main timeline at the end of Endgame to give the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson, but is it possible that it was a Skrull instead of the real Captain America.
Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken more than a decade to set the stage for it’s Infinity gauntlet arc. The Infinity saga reached its final destination with Avengers: Infinity war and Avengers: Endgame in which we saw all the Avengers assembling to save the universe for the first time.
Avengers: Infinity war plot revolved around Thanos collecting all the Infinity Stones and using them to erase half of the population of the Universe. After the events of Infinity war, Avengers: Endgame focus on the rest of the surviving heroes who tries to get back everyone they have lost.
Avengers: Infinity war plot revolved around Thanos collecting all the Infinity Stones and using them to erase half of the population of the Universe. After the events of Infinity war, Avengers: Endgame focus on the rest of the surviving heroes who tries to get back everyone they have lost.
After the final battle of Endgame which ceased with Tony’s snap, Steve Rogers travel back in time to return the stones to the original time and place where they were picked. However, he decides to stay in the past and live with Peggy Carter. After spending some time in the past, he returns as old Captain America to pass on his legacy to Sam Wilson.
Despite how emotional that moment was, it has been under scrutiny ever since Avengers: Endgame released. Fans believe that it was very out of character for Captain America to do something like that. Also, his return as Captain America old version makes us question everything the movie defined about time travel.
Followed by this, Marvels announced their Secret Invasion TV show which could suggest that the old Captain America was a Skrull that would answer all the questions and explain some things.
Steve returning as Old Captain America didn’t make sense
This is not the first time when time travel was introduced in a movie with its own time-travelling rules and regulations. The Marvel Studios was no different as the characters in Avengers: Endgame acknowledges that time travel is not like what movies and TV shows show.
When all the Avengers travel to different places and moments in the past to collect the Infinity stones, the superheroes created timeline branches instead of changing their present because of their actions in the past, meaning when they return to the main timeline nothing was changed in the past.
However, Captain America’s appearance as an old man didn’t set well with their time traveling logic. If Steve created a new timeline when he chose to stay with Peggy in the past, it wouldn’t have been possible for him to return as an old man to the main timeline. The only way that this was possible if he came back to the present timeline in the Time Machine that Tony and Bruce built together. As you all know that wasn’t the case which resulted in MCU’s time travel logic receiving backlash and flaring debates among viewers.
MCU Theory: A Skrull was posing as Old Captain America
Introduced in Captain Marvel, the Skrulls ended up being associates and even helped Nick Fury in Spiderman: Far from home. But this doesn’t mean that all of them have good intentions. As the Marvel Studios move forward with their future plans, they announced the Secret Invasion TV show which is based on the comic book event of the same name. The Skrulls are a unique race of extra-terrestrial shape shifters who make one of the largest intergalactic kingdoms in the Marvel Universe.
The Skrulls are skilled in science and warfare, the Kree and humankind are there biggest Enemies. In the comic book event, they were at the front and centre of the invasion, where the Skrulls take over the Earth with the help of their excellent shape shifting powers to discreetly replace many superheroes.
Given their existence in the MCU, the Skrulls have been a part of the universe for a long time and have been working closely with new Nick Fury and Captain Marvel. The fact that the Skrulls were working with Fury even after the events of Endgame, increases the possibility that he told them to feign as old Captain America or Captain Marvel asked them to do so. Also, it is possible that some evil Skrulls with an agenda of their own decided to do so as a part of their evil plan.
Why would Skrulls impersonate Old Captain America?
With the release of Disney+’s the Falcon and The Winter Soldier, we know that Sam Wilson is the new Captain America now after a lot of disputes and struggles. As we know John Walker was given the identity of a US agent at the end of the show, so Marvel Studios may be planning to introduce the Dark Avengers in future.
Given John Walker’s history in Marvel comic books, we know that he was a part of the Dark Avengers at some point. De Fontaine who recruited John Walker could be working for or with the Skrulls. Their big plan likely is to form Dark Avengers around John Walker, invade Earth and gave the shield to Sam impersonating Captain America old version to create issues between Sam and Bucky.
For a very long time now, rumours have been coming to the surface that Chris Evans is being approached to return to the MCU as Captain America, but it didn’t take long for Chris Evans to suggest that these are just rumours. Later on, the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige also denied Chris’ return.
However, in the last decade we have learned one thing about MCU that we shouldn’t trust Kevin and the rest of the cast every single time. If Chris Evans ever decides to return to the Marvel Universe it will be most likely in Secret Invasion.
This could reveal Skrulls involvement in Endgame and they could even continue imitating old Captain America as long as they need it for their invasion. This could be the most logical way to bring Chris back into the MCU as it will reveal that the old Captain America was a Skrull and we will get to see the young Captain America for one more time. Also, MCU could bring Chris back in flashbacks fixing the inconsistency in the plot created due to Steve returning as old Captain America.
