High School DxD season 5: Will it Happen? + Potential Release Date

High School DxD season 5, there still is a chance!

Few animes are timeless and often considered a pioneer in their genre, which, despite ending many years ago, are always in demand.

One such series that fans still fondly remember and want back on the small screens is the anime adaption of Ichiei Ishibumi s’ light novel, High School DxD.

The premise is set in a girls school, Kuoh Academy, which recently has turned co-ed; however, the biggest secret about the school is its population.

Unknown to the humans, Kuoh Academy comprises of angels, devils, and fallen angels as part of the student population.

The story follows Issei Hyodo, a perverted second year student who lives an ordinary albeit lecherous life.

After a regular school day, Issei is asked by a girl named Yuma Amano to a date, which he gleefully obliges.

But after the date, when they reach a local park, he is shocked by Yuma s’ request as she asks to die for her.

She reveals herself as a fallen angel and tries to kill him but is revived by a third-year student, Rias Gremory.

Issei wakes up the next morning, thinking that the events that occurred were all just a dream.

Immediately after being attacked by another fallen angel and waking up, he notices Rias naked in his room.

Rias reveals to Issei her identity as a devil and says due to his death at the hands of Yuuma, she has reincarnated him as a devil, making him her faithful servant in the process.

Confined to a life of servitude, Issei must train and learn the skills to survive in the violent world of angels and devils.

High School DxD has been a fan favourite in the harem genre for many years, and after the conclusion of season four in 2018, fans are still wondering if there will be any more instalments or not.

High School DxD Season 5Yet to be Announced

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal.

As mentioned earlier, High School DxD has been a massive success since its debut, as many believe it to be a kick-starter to the supernatural harem genre.

Take away the usual cliches and tropes associated with the genre, Highschool DXD is an interesting watch due to its solid raft of characters.

Financially, High School DxD was the sixth top-selling light novel series in Japan for 2012, selling a total of 654,224 units.

Also, in 2013, High School DxD sold over 346,173 copies, according to Oricon. The English version of the first manga volume reached No. 2 in the New York Times best-seller list. As of March 20, 2018, the first 25 volumes had 4 million copies in print.

So, if the reviews, ratings, and sales have been largely positive, why hasn’t the series been renewed for High School DxD season 5?

The answer has many streams to it, with the first being the change in studio, which happened after the third season.

The first three seasons were produced by TNK, and three years after its conclusion, studio Passione took up the fourth season.

Now, the fourth season received a lot of flak for its animation style as fans were used to graphics by TNK, which is usual when there is a swap in production studios.

Speaking with Monsters and Critics, the producer for the series, Satoshi Motonaga, revealed that the staff behind the anime series wanted to have a fresh take going into the fourth season in order to boost the series and help give it attention from old and new fans alike.

Motonaga revealed that with the shift in new production studio, Passione, he wanted High School DxD to have a fresh face to help it stand out in today’s market compared to when the first three seasons were produced,

“How in this market place can we keep this series alive and draw new audiences to it? This is kind of a challenge for ourselves, and we wanted to add a little boost, so that kind of transition to a new animation studio we thought would be a fresh take on it.”

Elaborating further, Motonaga revealed the new character designs were an extension of this fresh-faced philosophy, “A lot of time with animation studios, it’s kind of attached to the producer of that animation studio. They kind of come with their own character design and interpretations, and now that we’re shifting to a new studio, we wanted to take that opportunity to revisit the character design.

The original character designs were also very popular, so it was a hard decision, but the new animation studio wanted to take a new look at the characters themselves, too.”

Another reason for change in studio is the fact that TNK took many liberties while adapting the source material hence, Ish,ibumi had to request a new studio.</mar

During the production of this season, Ishibumi had the Passione staff read nearly all of the light novels so that they didn’t miss any inaccuracies and warned them off taking any creative liberties with the material like TNK.

Furthermore, Study Passione is not exactly a massive production house. As a result, it’s only able to produce a maximum of two animes per year, and currently, two or three projects are scheduled for future release.

The good news is there is plenty of source material available to produce High School DxD season 5, as the first four seasons only adapted ten out of the available 25 volumes.

Considering it’s been more than five years, it’s highly unlikely that studio Passione will renew for High School DxD Season 5.

However, its not to say other studios may not be open to pick up for the fifth seasons as if leaks are to be believed, studio Bind are working on High School DxD Season 5 with character designs similar to the first three seasons.

While an official High School DxD season 5 trailer and the High School DxD season 5 release date hasnt been revealed, the studio is targetting for a Spring 2024 premier.

Note: Leaks and Rumours should to be taken with a pinch of salt as its not an coming from any official sources.
