Mjolnir’s Return In Thor Love & Thunder: Every Possible Theory
A recently shared set video of Thor Love & Thunder reveals Mjolnir’s return in Thor 4 – but how? Here are all the possible explanations for Mjolnir’s return.
An upcoming superhero film, Thor Love & Thunder, is on its way. The film is directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Marvel Studios. It is based on a Marvel character, Thor, a God of Thunder who was born and brought up in Asgard. To date, there have been three films solely based on the life adventures of Thor, and the upcoming is going to be the fourth. The actor who plays the role of the leading character Thor is Chris Hemsworth.
The first premiere of the Thor series was released in the year 2011, from which Chris Hemsworth debuted in Marvel Cinematic Universe. Afterwards, two sequels were released; the first one was released in the year 2013, named Thor: The Dark World, and the second one in the year 2017, named Thor: Ragnarok.
The upcoming part of the Thor series, Thor Love & Thunder, is intended to be a direct sequel to the last one, Thor: Ragnarok. Alongside Thor, many Marvel characters are going to be included, which are Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson; Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt; Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff; Drax, played by Dave Bautista; Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel; Nebula, played by Karen Gillan; the return of Jane Foster, who will become Mighty Thor, played by Natalie Portman, and many more.
A new villain of Thor is going to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe named Gorr The Butcher, which will be played by Christian Bale. As the name suggests, this character has a ‘strange and terrifying’ sword from which he can kill any god and can be responsible for the extinction of Gods.
Recently an official trailer of Thor 4 was released, and the fans noticed one exciting detail, that Mjolnir, Thor’s Hammer, is returning in Thor Love & Thunder. In the last part, Thor’s sister, Hella, destroys Mjolnir and unleashes destruction on Asgard. In the Avengers series, a new weapon was created by Thor named ‘Stormbreaker’ to fight the biggest villain, Thanos. In the Avengers: Endgame, both the weapons of Thor, Stormbreaker and Mjolnir, were present, whereas Mjolnir was brought from the past. However, at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, but all the stones back to where they belonged along with Mjolnir. So how does Mjolnir return?
Mjolnir Could Be Repaired
The most likely explanation of Mjolnir’s Return in Thor 4 would be that it is repaired because, in the trailer, Mjolnir is showing bright blue cracks, which means it is repaired. In the trailer, when Jane Foster, aka Mighty Thor, grabs Mjolnir, Thor is surprised, so this means the repair didn’t happen at his request, as he has no clue about it. At one point in time, Mjolnir was Thor’s love, but his emotions were transferred to the next one, Stormbreaker; as in Avengers: Endgame, he gave Mjolnir to Captain America, saying to keep ‘the little one’ during the war with Thanos.
The reason for which Mjolnir would be repaired could be because of the inclination to have a symbolic weapon in the hearts of the Asgardian refugees living on Earth. Moreover, not anyone can repair a God’s weapon, and it would require Etri’s aid. Etri, the Dwarf, was the last survivor of Nidavellir because Thanos killed everyone else. Etri was the one who forged Mjolnir in the first place, so he would be the one to repair it.
Mjolnir Could Return From Another Dimension
As the MCU is getting his hands into the fields of the multiverse and different time dimensions, there is another fairly plausible theory that states that the Mjolnir shown in Thor Love & Thunder can be from another timeline. The Mjolnir from another dimension could’ve been transported to MCU Earth 616 timeline.
The multiverse has become one of the major themes of MCU’s projects, as it was present in Disney’s WandaVision, Loki, and also in the blockbuster premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home. A phase 4 of the multiverse is going to be released in a few days, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where anything can and will happen.
So there might be a Thor in another universe who mistakenly tosses Mjolnir into a portal which leads to another dimension, the main timeline itself.
Mjolnir Could Appear In Flashbacks
One of the simplest explanations of the events shown in the trailer of Thor 4 related to Mjolnir’s appearance can be that the hammer, Mjolnir, is entering the screen only through the flashbacks. A new villain, Gorr The Butcher, is going to be introduced in MCU via Thor Love & Thunder, and in the comics, Gorr The Butcher and Thor have a long history together. After Thor sees Gorr The Butcher, it might trigger the memories with Mjolnir.
However, if that did happen, it would not be the perfect thing to go with the events of MCU, as it would risk distracting the audience from the main thrust of Thor Love & Thunder storyline. The storyline focuses more on Thor’s transformation into a peace-loving adventurer. The flashbacks would feel like instead of going forward, MCU is looking backwards.
Mjolnir Could Return (Again) Through Time Travel
With so many theories to justify the return of Mjolnir in Thor 4, another theory suggests that one could bring it back by using the same method in Avengers: Endgame, time travel. To fight with Thanos’ army and to find out whether Thor is still worthy or not, he brought back Mjolnir to the present timeline, which was one of the best decisions in the premier.
This theory does seem unlikely, as the whole thing has already happened once, but if it is handled in a different manner, this could make the storyline interesting. So the time-travel theory shouldn’t be ruled out as the director and the writer Taika Waititi could choose to do something similar.
Is Mjolnir More Powerful Than All-Black The Necrosword?
Along with the question of Mjolnir’s return in Thor 4, another crucial thing to consider is whether the weapons of the superhero and the supervillain are capable of defeating the other?
The biggest villain of Thor, Gorr The Butcher, is going to enter Marvel Cinematic Universe through Thor 4 premiere. The legendary weapon of Gorr The Butcher is ‘All-Black The Necroswrod’. Gorr’s blade is forged with pure darkness and was wielded by the Evil God Knull. The All-Black weapon is actually sentient, and it chose Gorr because of his rage and hatred.
The combination of Gorr The Butcher and All-Black blade is daunting indeed. With the Mjolnir just repaired and showing cracks, too, there is a possibility that it won’t be the perfect weapon to fight Gorr The Butcher. Although there is Stormbreaker available, and with both of them together, like in Avengers: Endgame, this time Mjolnir will be used by Mighty Thor, Gorr the Butcher can be defeated.
The inclusion of Mjolnir in Thor Love & Thunder did surprise the audience, but it was necessary. The return of Jane Foster as Mighty Thor would need something to judge her worthiness, and picking Mjolnir by her in the trailer proves her worthy of Thor’s powers. However, which of the above theories will come true, or there will it be something totally different than what we imagined will reveal with the release on July 8, 2022.
