The story follows a shut-in and introvert, Jirouu Yakuin, who prefers playing video games to form meaningful relations. The only person Jirou has feelings for is his childhood crush, Shiori Sakurazaka, who he hopes to get paired with in the school’s special program aiming to develop social skills between students.
Unfortunately for Jirou, instead of Shiori, he gets paired with Akari Watanabe, a gyaru who is gorgeous, confident, and extroverted.
Similarly, Akari was hoping to be paired with school idol Minami Tenjin but on realizing neither Jirou wants his company, both work together to score enough points to switch partners.
Although initially averse towards each other, Jirou and Akari get on well and consequently begin to harbor feelings in the pretentious relationship.
Complications begin to occur when Shiori reveals her love for Jirou, and Tenjin explains to Akari that she is in love with Jirou.
Once an introvert, hikikomori now has his childhood crush and the school s’ beauty falling for him. Can Jirouu decide who he likes the most is the central plot of the show.
Currently, the first season of More than a Married Couple but Not Lovers is on air, but fans have already started wondering whether a second installment is on the cards or not.

Production studios look at various consumer metrics, both financial and commercial, before considering a renewal.
Although highly rated, more than a Married Couple but Not Lovers neither was able to make it to the Top 10 Best Anime on Crunchyroll nor provide a massive boost to manga sales.
Additionally, Studio Mother isn’t a big production studio, with only the Arifureta series getting a second installment.

It is expected More than a Married Couple but Not Lovers Season one will adapt four volumes of the manga which means the second season will begin by adapting the fifth volume.
Tenjin reveals he knows about Akari s’ feelings, but he only thinks of her as a little sister. He also informs her he is in love with someone else and asks her to move on from him.
Shiori and Jirouu have their first kiss, and as the summer vacations roll on, Akari admits her feelings for Jirouu but is anxious about Shirou and his actions.
The mid-terms bring an opportunity for both to exchange pairs, but they both wonder if it’s right to step away after such a long time.
Jirouu, on the last day of the special program, is embarrassed and simultaneously happy that he can be with his childhood crush. What will he do? Only More than a Married Couple but Not Lovers Season 2 can provide us with an answer.
