New concepts are being introduced in the MCU, along with new characters and cast.
Doctor Strange 2 focuses on the internal conflicts of Wanda and Doctor Strange, where they both are standing against each other. A new superhero is introduced via this film, America Chavez, who can travel through the multiverse by opening doors. The primary antagonist in the film is Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, who is going through some kind of emotional trauma far worse than we can imagine. And the primary protagonist, Doctor Strange, is with America Chavez doing everything he can to protect the new superhero from Wanda.
In the film, a scene included the presence of the Illuminati, a group of the strongest superheroes who secretly work behind the scenes protecting the universes. Through that group, many of the characters are introduced in MCU, like Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, Mr. Fantastic, aka Richard Reeds, etc. A new Captain Marvel was also shown in MCU, which wasn’t played by Brie Larson but by Lashana Lynch.
According to Marvel Comics, the Illuminati secret group include extremely powerful superheroes who make decisions on the most important issues at present. The superheroes are Iron Man, Black Panther, Black Bolt, Namor, Professor X, Mr. Fantastic, and Doctor Strange. In the MCU, they’ve included Captain Marvel, along with Captain Carter and Karl Mordo in the group Illuminati.
Doctor Strange 2’s Captain Marvel, played by Lashana Lynch
We all have witnessed the biggest release of Captain Marvel in the year 2019, where Brie Larson played the role of Carol Danvers and saved the population of Skrull, who was hunted by Kree. In the film, we saw Carol Denvers’ best friend Maria Rambeau playing a major role in helping Carol get her memory back. As the mother of future SWORD agent Monica Rambeau, shown in WandaVision, Lashana Lynch was expected to reprise her role as the government agency’s founder, Maria Rambeau, in The Marvels.
Does Maria Rambeau Become Captain Marvel In Marvel Comics?
In Marvel Comics, Maria Rambeau’s character description is obscure. However, in the MCU, she is shown as an accomplished air force pilot and eventually becomes the founder of S.W.O.R.D. Not particularly a superhero, but Maria Rambeau is more of a civilian in the comics, and her daughter, Monica Rambeau, becomes Captain Marvel later. Currently, the Monica Rambeau character has already acquired her powers while helping Wanda in WandaVision, a miniseries on Disney+.
What Happened to Maria Rambeau In MCU?
In the Captain Marvel movie, Maria Rambeau plays an essential role in helping Carol uncover the truth. Carol teams up with Maria, Nick Fury, and the rest of the Skrulls to fight with the Kree. At the fight won by Captain Marvel, Maria, and Nick Fury, Carol flew away with Skrulls to help them find a home. Nick Fury offers Maria a position in S.H.I.E.L.D, but it’s unclear whether she has accepted it or not.
In the WandaVision series, after five years, when everyone who was gone came back, we saw through the eyes of Monica Rambeau, Maria Rambeau’s daughter, that Maria died because of cancer after founding and running an organization named S.W.O.R.D. According to Monica, she was in her final stage of treatment when Thanos happened, but knowing about the death of her mother, Monica was affected deeply.
How Powerful Is Maria Rambeau’s Captain Marvel Compared to Carol Danvers?
Well, we all know Carol Danvers is one of the most powerful superheroes in MCU; as no need to remind what she did in Avengers: Endgame with Thanos. She became the last hope of Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War, and in the Endgame, because of her, they defeated Thanos. In the animated series of MCU, What if..?, another version of Captain Marvel is included, but it is played by Carol Denvers only. It showed the idea of being all-powerful and fighting evil.
However, in phase four, Doctor Strange 2, instead of Carol Danvers, Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch, appears to be Captain Marvel. She was shown as a Captain Marvel of Earth-838. It was difficult to argue how powerful she was exactly, but she did put in an impressive fight with Scarlet Witch. And as a member of the Illuminati, who are considered to be the most powerful of all, Maria Rambeau’s Captain Marvel performed quite well.
