Two Professional Wrestlers that Resemble the Biggest Villains in the Superhero World
Superhero stories and professional wrestling are two worlds that are more intertwined than most people would care to think. The superhero world has also diversified in recent years, even bringing WWE superstars directly into their programming. Cody Rhodes was featured on an episode of The Arrow a number of years ago, with Arrow lead actor himself Stephen Amell retorting in kind. Roman Reigns – Thanos
Roman Reigns is the biggest star in the wrestling industry today. He has been the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion for over 1,000 days, and he has ruled over the company with an iron fist since the summer of 2020. He has defeated the likes of John Cena, Brock Lesnar, and Goldberg during his epic title reign – the fourth longest in company history – and he has done so using plenty of underhanded tactics along the way. Low blows, weapon attacks and assistance from his Bloodline stablemates have all helped Reigns cling to the gold.
Many fans have compared him to the biggest villain in the Marvel Universe, Thanos. Both characters are seen as powerful, unstoppable forces that will stop at nothing to get what they want. Reigns’ “Tribal Chief” persona shows his desire to be on top and his willingness to do whatever it takes to stay there. Thanos’ quest to collect the Infinity Stones to gain unlimited power is a direct comparison to what Reigns is doing in the WWE to hold on to the Undisputed Championship.
CM Punk – The Joker
When CM Punk first burst onto the wrestling scene, he was considered a rebel and an outsider. As such, his Voice of the Voiceless persona closely resembles that of the Joker. The supervillain is known for being an unpredictable and chaotic anarchist who simply wants to watch the world burn. That is exactly what Punk was all about in his rise to the forefront of the WWE in 2011.
His infamous “pipe bomb” promo in 2011 was a perfect example of the Joker-like persona he was trying to portray. The promo was controversial, and unpredictable, with the Chicago-born star badmouthing everyone from Cena himself to the Chairman of the Board Vince McMahon, famously stating that maybe the company “would be better when Vince McMahon’s Dead.”
