Gate Season 3: Renewed or Cancelled + Release Date Predictions

Gate Season 3, will it ever happen?

At one time or another, isekai fans dream that their favorite characters could be present in real life.

While this may not be a possibility for now, there is always scope to mix fantasy and reality in anime, as evident in the anime adaption of Takumi Yanai s’ light novel series Gate.

The story follows Itami, a 33-year-old otaku who always puts his hobby first and, as a result, never takes his job seriously.

On his way to an anime and manga convention, a giant gate appears in Ginza, Tokyo, and when he walks into a pole, he begins having visions of a fantasy world.

A dragon flies out of the gate, followed by a legion of soldiers wearing what looks to be Roman armour, and they begin terrorizing the city.

One of the soldiers lunges at a police officer. Itami immediately tackles him to the ground and kills him with his dagger.

Despite being dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, he tries to get the police to evacuate the citizens, and after a call to their higher-ups, orders are followed.

It turns out Itami is a JSDF (Japan’s Special Defense Force) reservist and was promoted to First Lieutenant for his heroic efforts in Ginza.

Itami is unhappy about his new position, after all, he missed the convention and now has way more responsibility than he ever wanted.

He only took the job to pay for his hobby; the Otaku life is the only life for him.

The Prime Minister of Japan announced that they would be sending a JSDF unit through the gate, which is dubbed as the “Special Region,” with the full support of the US president.

After three months of preparation and scouting, the new Prime Minister of Japan declares that the JSDF is ready to deploy a special task force.

Their task was to learn more about the new world, befriend locals and ultimately make peace. The mission is risky and delicate, as one wrong move could result in a devastating war.

The first and second seasons were generally received with positive reviews and reactions from the isekai fans.

However, almost seven years on from the second season finale, fans are wondering if the third season will ever release.

WHAT IS THE GATE SEASON 3 RELEASE DATE?

WHAT IS THE Gate Season 3 release date
Source by A-1 Pictures

First and foremost, Gate Season one was released as a split cour, so essentially, it’s just one season that’s been broken into two parts, i.e., Season 1 Part 1 and Season 2 Part 2.

In the case of the Gate anime, both Crunchyroll and MyAnimeList refer to the second cour as Gate Season 2, so this article refers to any future episodes as Gate Season 3.

Studios often release series in split cours to balance the hectic production schedule.

Gate Season one aired from 4th July 2015 to 18th September 2015 for 12 episodes. The series was renewed for a second season which ran from 9th January 2016 to 26th March 2016 for further 12 episodes.

As of writing, there is no update from studio A-1 Pictures on the renewal of Gate Season 3.

Production studios consider various financial and consumer metrics before announcing a new season.

Financially, Gate did reasonably well with 4696 copies of Blu-ray sold in 2015, which increased to 5000 copies in 2016.

The Gate Blu-Ray Box-1 (First Edition) ranked at #7 on Japan’s Animation Blu-ray Disc Ranking for Nov 2017, with a total sale of 889 copies sold for a whole straight week.

A-1 Pictures is a prominent studio in anime production and are well known for picking up series of various genres.

Anime such as Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Magi, Sword Art Online, Blue Exorcist, Interviews with Monster Girls, Gate, The Asterisk War, 86 Season 2, and Black Butler have been developed by A-1 Pictures.

One of the reasons for the delay is the gap between the seasons. It is common for producers to take more than five years off between each season to increase curiosity and cover the lack of raw material.

The other reason is the lack of effective source material. Although there are still five volumes of light novels to be adapted, they are only parallel stories. At the same time, the main story ended in volume 5, which was adopted in season 2.

Also, fans like the light novels more than the anime because the anime skipped a lot of content, information, and details about the events that happened with Japan and JSDF.

But, A-1 Pictures could not do much without interrupting the plot’s pace with dialogue.

In summation, it looks unlikely Gate will be renewed for a third season soon. But by some miracle, it does, we can expect Gate Season 3 trailer and Gate Season 3 release date in late 2024.

GATE SEASON 3 PLOT

In the finale of Gate Season 2, “Thus, They Fought There,” 3rd Recon assists Itami and the group in the escape with Pina, Hamilton, and the Emperor.

Pina is adjudged a traitor by Zorzal, but Itami, along with Lelei and Roy, stops the proceedings.

Zorzal calls upon the Ogre, but it is immediately slayed, which forces him to release Pina. Itami wars Zorzal to stay away from Pina else he will face the same consequences as the Ogre.

With the target secured, Itami prepares to leave the imperial capital as the weapons are destroyed by the modern military.

The Emperor makes Pina his heart knowing Zorzal will never make who, in turn, leave the capital, vowing revenge against the modern army.

Pina is crowned the Empire s’ princess reinstating the promise to bring peace between the Empire and Japan.

The episode ends with Itami s’ arrest, who had wandered off to a doujin convention instead of attending the coronation.

Gate Season 2 covered 37 chapters and five volumes of the light novel, which means five more volumes are available as source material for Gate Season 3.

The next major arc is the Weigh Anchor arc, for which several critical events from the subsequent five volumes need to be set up in Gate Season 3.

After being left off the hook by Itama, Zorzal looks to rally the imperial troop to fight against the Empire.

The battle pans out in Zorzal favor as his troops manage to destroy JSDF s’ helicopters and tanks, with some soldiers’ deaths adding to the massacre.

Peace on Earth isn’t solely dependent on extra-terrestrial invaders as China, America, and Russia retaliate against Japan s’ monopoly over the Special Region.

The portal is destroyed by the Chinese agents, which leaves the military struck forever while Itama loses any will to live as he can’t attend conventions anymore.

Gate Season 3 will most likely feature a storyline with Itama in the backdrop as he trains to become a Dragon Knight.

A new portal needs to be created to reopen connections with Earth, but Gate Season 3 characters face the latest threat in the form of Alien Xenomorphs.

Theorizes by Gate fans that the third season should focus on the precursor to Weigh Anchor arc for which volume 5 to 9 exists as source material.

The Weigh Anchor arc is set after the creation of the new portal as world powers fight over the control of the Special Region as the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF) gets involved.
