The Witcher Series on Netflix got various criticisms on Yennefer’s interpretation resembles the fans’ responses on Henry Cavill’s Superman.
The Witcher Series was released on Netflix in 2019, and the second season was recently released on November 17, 2021. The unexpected turn of events in the witcher season 2 makes Henry Cavill playing the role of Geralt of Rivia turns around the biggest criticism on Superman.
Henry Cavill’s debut in Hollywood was with the role of a superhero in the movie Man of Steel. The fans of superheroes were divided as Superman was not portrayed as his previous manifestations, but different. Comparably, similar criticisms were given to the character of the Witcher Series. However, this time, the criticisms are not focused on Henry Cavill, the Witcher Geralt’s character, but on the performance of Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg.
The Witcher Series is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s fictional novels, which also take from the video games of the Witcher. The leading character, Witcher in the series, Henry Cavill, is a monster hunter who fights with humans and with monsters to safeguard Ciri. Princess Cirilla of Cintra, Ciri, played by Freya Allan, is a young girl who comes under Geralt’s protection after the death of her family.
In the Witcher Season 2, the young girl’s existence spreads throughout the Continent along with the information that Ciri entails the power to end the world. Ciri’s uncontrollable power inside has the ability to open portals to the other worlds.
The biggest shock in the Witcher Season 2 comes when Anya Chalotra as Yennefer risks Ciri’s life for her benefit. Yennefer and Geralt were lovers in the Witcher Season 1, but they drifted apart because of some differences. However, in the Witcher Season 2, Geralt and Yennefer cross paths when Geralt is trying to protect Ciri from worldly dangers.
Henry Cavill Superman Criticism Flips
Superman Henry Cavill received criticism focusing on the final battle of Superman in Man of Steel. The thrilling fight between Superman and Zod starts and ends with Superman killing Zod because he has to stop him from harming a group of innocent pedestrians. The decision to kill Zod made many viewers unhappy.
The fans were upset because the role of the hero portrayed in the Man of Steel strayed from its benevolent spirit. A hero killing someone for the greater good was becoming the biggest criticism at that point in time.
In the Witcher Series, similar issue from the Man of Steel movie has been shown, but it doesn’t target Henry Cavill, Witcher, but a powerful sorcerer, Yennefer.
In the Witcher books written by Andrzej Sapkowski, Yennefer becomes the Witcher, Geralt’s lover, and along with that, she becomes a mother-like figure to Ciri. In the original books, the three Yennefer, Geralt, and Ciri become a family where Yennefer teaches Ciri to control her powers.
However, in the Witcher Series on Netflix, a little diversion was shown from the books where Yennefer betrays Geralt and risks Ciri’s life which made fans furious.
Similar to Henry Cavill’s Superman, the Witcher’s Yennefer character is not shown as entirely negative. The events which made fans unhappy happened because Yennefer lost her powers, and to get them back, she was ready to do anything.
In Netflix’s Witcher, Yennefer was shown to focus on the thought that her power means everything, and without the powers, she is nothing. This is the reason why Yennefer considered sacrificing another person’s life as a bargain for her powers. Yennefer’s self-image is shown dominated by her magic, for which she was ready to sacrifice Ciri to the Deathless Mother Voleth Meir.
The diversion in Yennefer’s narrative in the Netflix Witcher Series is an interesting concept; however, it can lead to numerous consequences in the future. The betrayal can adversely affect the relationship between Yennefer and Geralt, and it might result in Yennefer being removed from Geralt’s list of people he can count on.
It is likely that Yennefer will redeem herself by taking care of Ciri and helping her control her powers, but it is expected that Geralt Henry Cavill will be more cautious after the incident of Voleth Meir.
The Henry Cavill-led Witcher Series on Netflix are notably different from the witcher books, the source material. But the differences play a wild card in making it either good or bad. The upcoming seasons can be similar to the source material, or it may take a new storyline that is genuinely enjoyed by the fans.
