Fall 2021 was privy to the utilization of this trope as the anime adaption of Tomohito Oda s’ manga Komi Can’t Communicate series hit the small screen.
The story is set in the Itan Private High School, wherein the beautiful Shoko Komi attends her first day. The moment she enters the school, all eyes are on her as every single person, including strangers, seeks her attention.
During class, she is assigned the seat next to the male protagonist of the series, Hitohito Tadano, who, albeit wanting to avoid trouble, becomes universally hated at once.
Due to a chain of events, Tadano finds himself alone with Komi, and as he tries to speak to her, she runs away instantly. Tadano realizes Komi can’t speak to people and suffers from severe social anxiety.
Tadano suggests that she should write on the chalkboard to communicate, but Komi fails due to her anxiety. Seeing the disappointed Komi, Tadano begins to write his own message on the board, allowing her to have their first real conversation with a friend.
After making her first friend, Komi reveals that she fears rejection by fellow peers and dreams of making 100 friends to overcome her adversity.
Tadano decides to lend her a helping hand as Komi now attempts to socialize with and befriend the other students in her class.
Komi Can’t Communicate was an instant success upon its debut, as fans enjoyed the rom-com dynamics of Komi and Tadano.
However, fans are begging to wonder if and when there will be a second installment of Komi-san.

WHAT IS THE KOMI CAN’T COMMUNICATE SEASON 3 RELEASE DATE?
Komi Can’t Communicate season one aired from 11th November 2021 to 23rd December 2021 for 12 episodes.
The second season was treated as a split cour by Netflix, and hence it was labeled by both MyAnimeList and Crunchyroll as Komi Can’t Communicate season 2.
The series was renewed for a second season which aired from 7th April 2022 to 23rd June 2022 for 12 episodes.
As of writing, there is no update from Studio OLM or Netflix on the renewal of Komi Can’t Communicate season 3.

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal.
Komi Can’t Communicate was one of the most wanted anime adaptions, as the series was ranked first in a 2020 poll conducted by AnimeJapan of “Most Wanted Anime Adaptation.”
The series won the Crunchyroll Anime Award for best comedy at the 6th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2022, while Shoko Komi was also nominated for the “Best Girl” category, and the series was also nominated for the “Best Romance” award.
Furthermore, Komi Can’t Communicate was the highest-rated comedy anime series of Fall 2021, pipping the likes of My Senpai is Annoying, Taisho Otome Fairy Tale, and The Vampire Dies in No Time.
Financially, the second season’s premiere also gave a good boost to manga sales, as in April 2022, the Komi Can’t Communicate manga was in the Oricon Top 20.
The first two seasons of the Komi anime managed to make the Netflix Japan Top 10, but not the global Netflix Top 10 for English or non-English TV shows.
Chief director Ayumu Watanabe was asked in an interview with Looper on 3rd June 2022, “Are you prepared to continue directing the anime for as many more years as it’s going to run?”
Watanabe responded, “Yes. I think any director would love to work on whatever they’re working on and see it until the end. I would love to, at least until they graduate,”
All in All, the chances of Komi Can’t Communicate being renewed are pretty high. Still, one factor which needs to be considered before announcing a new season is availability of the studio.
Currently, Studio OLM s’ schedule for 2023 looks completely stacked, with six new projects set for release at various parts of the year.
Hence, it looks very unlikely that Komi Can’t Communicate season 3 will happen any time soon and could eventually be a multiyear wait.
Nevertheless, if the production for the third season begins in early 2024, we can expect Komi Can’t Communicate Season 3 trailer and Komi Can’t Communicate Season 3 release date by late 2024 or early 2025.
KOMI CAN’T COMMUNICATE MANGA CATCHUP
Komi Can’t Communicate manga is written by Tomohito Oda and illustrated by Tomohito Oda. It began serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine on 18th May 2016.
The manga has been collected into 28 volumes, with the latest issue released on 18th January 2023.
Komi Can’t Communicate won the 67th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2022, and Polygon named the manga one of the best comics of 2019.
As of September 2018, the first ten volumes had over 2 million copies in circulation, and by February 2021, the first twenty volumes had over 5.2 million copies in circulation. By December 2021, the manga had over 6 million copies in circulation.
As of June 2022, the manga has sold over 7.4 million copies for volumes 1-25, including digital.

KOMI CAN’T COMMUNICATE SEASON 3 PLOT
In the finale of Komi Can’t Communicate season 2, “It’s just White Day,” Tadano wonders what to gift Komi for White which leads him to ask Hitomi for help, but Hitomi assumes it’s a gift for a boy.
Hitomi asks if he likes that person who makes Tadano nervous, and later the pair visit the department store to buy a gift. Tadano visits Komi to gift her a hand cream she receives gleefully after he leaves, which Komi applies to her hands.
Back at school, Komi and everyone engage in a game of eraser fight wherein the aim is to bump enemy erasers off them. As the game draws to an end, Najimi, in attempting to eliminate Komi, injures her finger leading to the latter s’ win.
After school, Komi and Tadano reflect on their upcoming second year, but their moment is interrupted by Najimi. On their first day as second-years, Komi wishes that she and Tadano could have another good year.
Komi Can’t Communicate Season 2 will be covered till Volume 10: Chapter 130 of the manga, which means Komi Can’t Communicate Season 3 will begin by adapting Volume 10: Chapter 131.
Komi, in her second year of high school, is sad that all the memories of her first year are left behind.
She runs into a new student named Rumiko Manbagi, who is insecure about her appearance.
Manbagi is a manba-styled gyaru girl with tanned skin, bleached light blonde hair, and a girly fashion sense. Similar to Komi, Manbagi finds it hard to make friends.
Komi makes friends with Manbagi, who incidentally is only the second person she befriends on her own.
Komi Can’t Communicate Season 3 characters will have new storylines, as is the case with Komi herself when her family is ready for adventure during the holidays.
But things turn serious when a sudden storm strands Tadano and Komi in a deserted cabin. How will they avoid catching colds with only one blanket to warm them?!

Komi Can’t Communicate anime is directed by Ayumu Watanabe, with Kazuki Kawagaoe serving as the assistant director. Deko Akao and Yumi Suzumori script the show, while Hiroaki Kojima is the animation producer.
Characters are designed by Atsuko Nakajima, and the music is composed by Yukari Hashimoto.
Miku Itō performed the opening theme, “Ao 100 Shoku”, while FantasticYouth performed the ending theme, “Koshaberi Biyori.”
