A Japanese anime series, Jujutsu Kaisen, include a lot of characters who have a unique yet fun way of expressing themselves with others while communicating.
The popular Japanese Manga series, Jujutsu Kaisen, loved by a lot of viewers, was created by Gege Akutami and was released in March 2018. In the last year, 2021, Jujutsu Kaisen Series completed its eighteen tankōbon volumes. The series was given the license to release in the English language in North America and was licensed to stream outside of Asia.
The storyline of Jujutsu Kaisen follows a character named Yuji Itadori, a high school student who joins a secretive organization Jujutsu Sorcerers. Yuji joins the organization with the purpose of killing a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, but later, Yuji becomes its host.
The series includes a lot of interesting characters who have the ability to express their minds in a very creative manner. Communication is one of the essential skills for survival which equips people with the ability to connect with others. Communication is not only verbal but has various forms, such as body language, facial expressions, written content, etc.
The verbal form of communication has been given the most importance, and it sure is possibly the most effective form of communication. However, some people, or characters in this particular anime, are unable to express themselves to others. There could be various reasons for not being able to talk, like social anxiety, fears, past traumas, etc.
The anime characters from the Jujutsu Kaisen series have no choice but to use other unconventional ways of communicating with others. The ways are different from the others but are really creative and fun for the audience.
10. Taoge Inumaki: Communicates With Rice Ball Ingredients
A supporting character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series, Taoge Inumaki, is a descendant of the Inumaki family who got a unique and powerful cursed speech technique. Taoge Inumaki was born with Snake and Fangs, which is rather rare in the Inumaki clan. Taoge appears to be a quiet and distant boy, but later, the audience discovers his somewhat aloof persona.
The character Taoge Inumaki is one of the strongest students who got high mobility (a very athletic individual) and high endurance, as the speech technique he has requires a lot of stamina. Taoge has the cursed speech, which makes others, both humans and cursed spirits, forced to follow his commands, to obey. Taoge uses rice ball ingredients as a defence mechanism which helps him not to hurt himself and others.
9. Shouko Komi: Uses Gestures, Blackboards & Notebooks
One of the main characters, Shouko Komi, is a character who can’t communicate has a communication disorder. The character is said to be the Madonna of her high school but has problems with socializing with others. Shouko is unable to utter a single word because of her anxiety and fear of rejection by her peers.
Shouko Komi has a strange dream of making 100 friends and wants to go on this quest, but her communication disorder is a big hurdle. Instead of expressing herself with speech, Shouko communicates what she needs through her facial and body gestures, notebooks, and the classroom chalkboard. Her friend Hitohito Tadano helps her interpret and explain her needs to others.
8. Switch: Communicates through Software Synthesis
Kazuyoshi Usui, aka Switch, is the brains of Sket Dan, a campus support group that is designed to help others. Because of a traumatic event, Switch lost his ability to use his voice while communicating, and instead, he uses a voice synthesizer.
Switch received help to get over his deep depression but still is not comfortable in using his voice again. He prefers to use speech synthesis software which is present on his laptop helps him talk. The software works perfectly with Switch, as he has a deadpan expression, and the software speaks in a deadpan tone.
7. Susanna Hopkins: Uses Memes & Anime Quotes to Communicate
One of Kanako Ohno’s American Friends, Susanna Hopkins, is also popularly known as ‘Sue’ in Genshiken: Second Generation. Susanna has moved from the United States to Japan to study at University. Susanna has knowledge of a large number of popular anime and manga quotes and memes, which she recites in fluent Japanese.
Susanna is fluent in Japanese, but she prefers to communicate her feelings explicitly through memes and manga quotes. Many characters are stunned by her meme/quote responses and are never sure how to respond to them.
6. Yano: Relies on Impressive Freestyle Rap Skills
A character in Odd Taxi, Haruhito Yano, is a 27-year-old porcupine. When caught off guard or surprised, Yano uses his multilingual vocabulary by rapping out the conversations he has to say. Yano is Dabu’s junior who hates each other’s guts, like cats and dogs. While talking to Dabu, Yano constantly makes hand gestures while rapping.
A clever and ruthless man, Yano, writes rap lyrics is not an easy task and requires a great deal of creativity and flexibility. The skill of freestyle rap needs a good command of vocabulary, and the character, Yano, mostly writes cryptic and full slang to other characters.
5. Rina Tennoji: Expresses Her Emotions Through A Sketchbook
One of the main characters of Love Level Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, Rina Tennoji, is not able to converse with others through speech. Rina is not able to converse with others as well is unable to change her expressions. Rina Tennoji constantly has a facial expression naturally in Love Line! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club.
Rina Tennoji has faced a lot of social anxiety, and her voice has a deadpan quality which doesn’t work well with her emotions while expressing. To communicate, Rina Tennoji uses a sketchbook to draw out her facial expressions of emotions she is feeling at the point. During her live performances, Rina relies on a Digital Mask that shows emotions for her.
4. Hanami: Speaks Backwards, Which is Understood Telepathically
An antagonist in the Jujutsu Kaisen series, Hanami, is a special grade cursed spirit which is aligned with Mahito’s fiction. Hanami is a very powerful being who speaks the nonsensical and made-up language. Hanami’s voice is heard out loud reversed by others. The powerful cursed spirit, Hanami, wishes to kill all the humans as a sacrifice which will result in a cleaner world controlled by cursed spirits.
However, the technique of Hanami’s communication was phased out eventually, but fans still believe that Hanami is speaking in reverse. In one of the episodes, Jogo mentioned that still no one can interpret a single word Hanami is saying, but the meaning of his words flows right into their minds.
3. Faris NyanNyan: Uses Cat-Puns for Communication
A part-time employee and the owner of the maid café, Faris NyanNyan, her real name is Rumiho Akiha. Faris is the most popular waitress in Mayuri Shiina café and a second-year student at Kanaria Private Academy.
In the Japanese series, Faris’s speech is full of cat-puns mostly made-up of “nya,” which in Japanese means ‘meow.’ She often ends her sentences with ‘nya’ or ‘nyan,’ which indicate her dedication to playing a moe character in her café. Faris’s speech works best in Japanese, as in English dub one word ‘meor-ster’ means ‘master,’ and loses its meaning.
2. Kokichi Muta: Uses Ultimate Mechamaru In His Daily Life
A supporting character, Kokichi Muta, was introduced to the world in Jujutsu Kaisen Series. Kokichi is a second-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High. He was born with a sickly and fragile body that can’t tolerate the light of the sun or moon because of Heavenly Restriction.
Kokichi Muta uses his ultimate Mechamaru technique for proxy in his high school. His technique is also called Puppet Manipulation, which he uses for day-to-day activities. Kokichi is a reserved being who resented the opportunity of a future outside of the Jujutsu world.
1. Cetly Sturluson: Has to be Invented While Communicating
The Black Rider, or The Headless Rider, Cetly Sturluson, is an Irish fairy who entered the borders of Japan looking for her stolen head. Cetly Sturluson is from Durarara!! Series who has a stylish figure riding the motorcycle with an iconic yet attractive helmet.
The ghost with a headless rider, Cetly Sturluson, doesn’t have many options to communicate. She uses the default technique of texting, messaging boards, or the old-fashioned pen and paper to express her thoughts to others. One character, Shinra Kishtani, is a very close being to Cetly and can decipher her gestures without any written help.
