Tokyo Mew Mew Season 2: Release Date Confirmed + Trailer and Key Visual Revealed

Tokyo Mew Mew Season 2 official release date announced

Anime has multiple diverse subgenres, which, when paired with traditional themes, produce engaging storylines, and one such sub-genre is Magical Girl.

Magical Girl is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy media, including anime, manga, light novels, and live-action media, centered around young girls who possess magical abilities, which they typically use through an ideal alter ego into which they can transform.

It was an extremely popular genre in the early 90s and noughties, with series like Sailor Moon introducing the concept of a “transforming heroine” who fights against forces of evil.

While magical girl is not as prevalent as before, Summer 2022 offered a chance to witness one such series as the anime adaption of Reiko Yoshida s’ manga hit the small screen.

The story follows Ichigo Momomiya, who is looking forward to starting her high school life and eventually falling in love. She immediately develops a crush on the good-looking and popular Masaya Aoyama, who is passionate about environment conservation.

Upon knowing his interest, Ichigo buys tickets to an endangered species exbibit as part of her first date.

During their date, Ichigo is struck by a mysterious light and faints. Waking up to the sight of Aoyama, she remains unharmed, but they both must escape from a giant rat-like creature after it injures Aoyama.

To save her crush, Ichigo awakens her powers and transforms into a heroine with the skills of a cat. After she defeats the monster, researchers Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka explain that Ichigo was chosen to become a part of the Mew Project.

The projects involve a group of five magical girls whose DNA has been infused with those of certain endangered species. Now, Ichigo must find the rest of her teammates to defeat the Chimera Anima beings infected by aliens who want to take over the world before it is too late.

Tokyo Mew Mew season one was received with mixed reviews, but a second season has been scheduled to release.

Tokyo Mew Mew is the remake of the original series animated by Tokyu Agency and Studio Pierrot.

Fans of the original were glad that the series was making a comeback after almost 20 years, but just like most remakes, it failed to live up to the expectations.

Anime has come a long way, and unlike the noughties, modern anime fans are more inclined toward mainstream genres like Shonen, Isekai, Slice of Life, and Adventure.

While Tokyo Mew Mew did return after two decades, it couldn’t manage to break into the top-rated comedy fantasy list of Summer 2022 as series like Isekai Ojisan, The Devil is a Part-Timer, Vermeil in Gold were far more popular.

Nevertheless, Shoujo still has a massive fanbase, and Tokyo Mew Mew holds a lot of nostalgic weight as, for many fans, it was their first Magical Girl anime series.

In the finale of Tokyo Mew Mew season one, “Rain and Tears,” Ichigo arrives at the scene, and Mew Mew faces off against a strong Kishu and his fellow aliens.

Tokyo is in panic as the sky gets covered by a massive creature released by Dust Wyvern through a giant cocoon.

Ichigo launches an attack from the top of the tower but only spreads the dust even more. To purify the air, the Mew Mew tries to locate the Mew aqua, but the efforts go in vain, which leads to Ichigo taking on the Aliens once again.

Seeing Ichigo s’ resolve, the other Mews also help her, and they push back the Aliens. Mint locates Mew Aqua but gets stopped by Quice and Pie; however, Ichigo arrives to rescue the situation.

Zakuro rescues Mint and flings her to the sky, where the Mew Aqua is located. Once Mint finds the Mew Aqua, Masha appears, and Ryo instructs Mint to feed it to Masha. After she does, Masha transforms into a rod.

The air is purified, which causes the Dust Wyvern to faint and eventually transform back to the rod.

Ichigo, along with the Mews, defeats the Dust Wyvern by gaining the Straw Bell Version Up, thus causing the Aliens to retreat.

Following the battle, Ichigo arrives at the location for her date with Aoyama, but he is nowhere to be found. Just before Ichigo begins wondering if he has left, Aoyama appears behind her.

Aoyama hugs her and confesses that he likes her, and crying, Ichigo responds back by stating she likes him back as well.

The episode ends with three Aliens bowing to a giant blue bubbling crystal that claims it’s time to awaken is nigh on the pretty blue planet.

The synopsis for the plot of Tokyo Mew Mew Season 2 goes as follows, “Tokyo Mew Mew defended the city of Tokyo from alien attacks. But the aliens seem to be thinking of their next move. In addition, a mysterious handsome man appears in front of Mew Ichigo—?!”
