TWIN STAR EXORCISTS SEASON 2: RENEWED OR CANCELLED? [JULY 2022 UPDATE]
Twin Star Exorcists Season 2, is it coming back or canceled once and for all?
Over the years, the anime community has begun appreciating the Supernatural/Horror genre, albeit the general scene is dominated by Shonen or Isekai anime.
Whether you are a fan or simply a casual watcher of this genre, there is no debate that some of the best anime in recent times have been supernatural such as Death Note, Mob-Psycho, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc.
Likewise, Twin Star Exorcists or Sōsei no Onmyōji is Supernatural-Adventure anime based on the manga by the same name written and illustrated by Yoshiaki Sukeno. The plot follows a powerful exorcist Rokuro Enmadou who once wanted to become the strongest exorcist, but an unknown event two years ago made him give up this dream. Now, he wants nothing to do with Exorcists.
Exorcists are responsible for purifying the parallel realm Megano, filled with monsters known as Kegare. The Exorcist Union summons an exorcist by the name of Benio Adashino, and on her way, she runs into Rokuro Enmadou.
Their meeting isn’t coincidental as Benio and Rokuro are not only the Twin Starts but also destined to be married and become the parents of the reincarnation of Abe no Seimei called Miko, who will eventually cleanse the world of all impurity.
Can the Twin stars relieve the world from malicious forces as destiny works its magic, is the central plot of the show.
The first season was received with mixed reviews, and fans have wondered if Twin Star Exorcists season 2 will ever happen. Keep scrolling to find out the answer.
Twin Star Exorcists is rated 7.3/10 and ranked #2473 with 464k members on MyAnimeList.
TWIN STAR EXORCISTS RENEWAL STATUS
The first season of Twin Star Exorcists ran from 6th April 2016 – 29th March 2017 for 50 episodes.
As of July 2022, there is no confirmation from creators or studio Pierrot on a renewal of Twin Star Exorcists Season 2. According to Anime News Daily, the show isn’t canceled either.
So, if the show is neither canceled nor renewed, why is there no information from the creators? The simple answer is that the first outing of Twin Star Exorcists failed to live up to the expectations and is considered a failure.
Let’s check out why the show petered out after its debut.
WHY DID TWIN STAR EXORCISTS FAIL + WHAT POSSIBLE RELEASE DATE?
The big thing for Twin Star Exorcists was the animation studio behind its creation, i.e., Studio Pierrot.
Studio Pierrot is a veteran in anime production with hit shows like Naruto, Bleach, The Legend of Korra, and many more under their belt.
So, when Pierrot did pick up Twin star Exorcist, the buzz and hype skyrocketed massively amongst the fandom. Sadly, the studio also became one of the culprits for the show s demise.
The main echoing complaint against Twin Star Exorcists concerns the vast difference between the series and the much-loved source material.
While the central romantic conceit between the principal leads remains intact, the anime adopts little else from the manga.
After Episode 20, the anime devolves into telling a hyper-shonen-sized version of the original story, rife with divergent filler rather than faithful adaptations of key events from the manga.
If you are a studio creating a shonen anime, the first and foremost duty is to remain true to the source material.
Few sins are more likely to disappoint hardcore fans than unfaithful adaptations, and (unfortunately) Twin Star Exorcists was guilty of just that.
Secondly, another big mistake by the production studio was to release the show at the same time as My Hero Academia. The latter became one of the biggest shonen anime of all time, which took away the spotlight from Twin Star Exorcists.
Finally, it’s been five years since the show ended, and considering it was released as a shonen anime, that’s a pretty long time taken for renewal. Looking at all the above reasons, the chances for a second season look bleak for Twin star Exorcist.
With that said, modern animes are being renewed even after five years, so there is still hope. If and when the show is picked up again, Twin Star Exorcists season 2 release date can be between late 2022 or early 2023.

TWIN STAR EXORCISTS MANGA CATCHUP
Twin Star Exorcists manga is written and illustrated by Yoshiaki Sukeno. It began serializing on 4th October 2013 in Jump Square Magazine.
The first issue was released on 4th February 2014, and the series has been collected into 28 volumes consisting of 106 chapters as of 3rd June 2022.The Twin Star Exorcists anime adapted only 13-14 chapters from the manga, i.e., the show is only about 20 percent canon.
The word ‘adaptation’ for anime has quite a flexible definition. Most often, the term ‘adaptation’ means that the production company takes the source material and tries their best to make a carbon copy of the series that they decided to make in animated form.
But at the same time, the word ‘adaptation’ can mean “based on” the source material and have its anime-original plots and endings that contradict what the original series may have entailed. Twin star Exorcists, or Sousei no Omnyouji, is an example.
The anime starts to diverge from its source in the first episode but dives into anime-original stuff around Episode 20. This means it is recommended to start from the manga’s beginning.
Before an anime is renewed for a second installment, various factors are considered, such as popularity, manga and disc sales, international exposure, etc.
As of 1st March 2021, Twin Star Exorcists had over 5 million copies in circulation. For a shonen anime, that number would be considered below average; financially speaking, it would not demand a second season.
Twin Star Exorcists manga is rated 7.9/10 and ranked #325 with 43k members on MyAnimeList.
