According to Tom Holland, Spider-Man 4 Will Only Happen Under One Extremely Difficult Condition

Although Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are still planning Spider-Man 4, Tom Holland’s return is contingent on challenging conditions.

On the condition of a challenging requirement, Tom Holland will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe specifically for Spider-Man 4. After the tremendous triumph of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the beloved superhero has been absent from the MCU since 2021.

Nevertheless, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have been collaborating on developing Spider-Man 4, which has been in progress for over a year.

Although Holland has acknowledged his involvement in discussions regarding a return to the MCU, he remains cautious about reprising his role. During an interview with Yahoo Entertainment (as reported by Kevin Polowy), the experienced MCU actor briefly touched upon Spider-Man 4 and the conditions required for his total return as the web-slinger.

Holland expressed that unless they can surpass the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker may choose to retire from his superhero duties, stating:

“If we cannot find a means to surpass the third installment, he will retire and leave the spotlight.”

Absolutely! As per an interview with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige published in Entertainment Weekly in February 2023, it has been confirmed that the script for Spider-Man 4 is currently in progress. Feige revealed, “All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”

In a New York Times interview conducted in December 2021, Feige and fellow Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal confirmed the upcoming fourth film. Feige mentioned that discussions were taking place between himself, Amy Pascal, Disney, and Sony, regarding developing the next chapter in the Spider-Man story.

Pascal further commented, “At the end of the movie we just completed, Spider-Man makes a significant decision that he has never made before. It involves a sacrifice, providing us with a wealth of material to explore in the next film.”

However, this was only one mention of a potential trilogy. On November 29, 2021, Pascal initiated the conversation in an interview with Fandango.

She stated, “This will not be the final movie we make in collaboration with Marvel. We are preparing to create the next Spider-Man film with Tom Holland and Marvel. We envision this as a trilogy and will proceed with the next three films. Our journey in the MCU is not coming to an end.”

Holland has yet to officially commit to a new contract with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures but is exploring the possibility of Spider-Man 4 instead. Holland’s statement raises the question of whether Spider-Man 4 should be Peter’s final appearance in the MCU.

Holland’s point is valid, as Spider-Man: No Way Home pushed the boundaries of storytelling by delving into the multiverse, setting a high standard for future sequels to follow in terms of Peter’s narrative arc throughout the trilogy.

However, if the two studios fail to develop a compelling concept that can carry Spider-Man into a new trilogy, it might be wise for the next film to wrap up Peter’s storyline.

This could present an opportunity for the MCU to finally introduce Miles Morales in a live-action capacity, especially since Sony Pictures is already considering giving the character his standalone movie. Spider-Man 4 could serve as Holland’s farewell to the MCU while simultaneously paving the way for Miles to continue the Spider-Man legacy.

Spider-Man 4 is crucial, especially considering how Spider-Man: No Way Home ended, leaving Peter alone. At the very least, the MCU should address the aftermath of that story and provide a satisfying conclusion for Peter so that he doesn’t feel completely isolated in the world. Hopefully, more updates regarding Spider-Man 4 will emerge.

While awaiting official confirmation, Pascal indirectly confirmed in an interview with Variety on May 31, 2023, that Tom Holland would return to portray Spider-Man again. She acknowledged that the project is in progress, but its development has been put on hold due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.

Pascal stated, “Will we make another movie? Of course, we will. We are in the process, but currently, no work is being done due to the writer’s strike. We are all showing support, and once the situation is resolved, we will commence our work.”

Although Tom Holland has not officially confirmed his return, he expressed his willingness to continue in the Spidey Verse in an interview with Entertainment Tonight just a day later.

During the premiere of his new Apple TV+ series, The Crowded Room, he stated, “I believe as long as we can do justice to Peter Parker, as long as we can continue to raise the bar and make the films even better and more meaningful, then I’ll be there.

I would be foolish not to say that I wouldn’t be the luckiest person if I had the opportunity to do it again. Things are in motion, but we’ll have to wait and see what unfolds.”

In a May 2022 interview with Deadline, Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman was asked whether Tom Holland, Zendaya, and director Jon Watts would be involved in Spider-Man 4, to which he responded, “We hope that the entire group will be part of it.”

Whispers about Tom’s potential return emerged as early as December 2021 when No Way Home premiered in theaters. During an interview with Variety at the premiere, Pascal conveyed her enthusiasm for collaborating with Tom again, stating, “As long as he desires to continue making Spider-Man movies, we will continue making Spider-Man movies. But as a producer, I always believe everything will fall into place.” When asked if we will see Tom reprise his role as Spider-Man, Pascal replied, “If it’s up to me, we definitely will”.
