DAGASHI KASHI SEASON 3: RENEWAL STATUS + RELEASE DATE
Dagashi Kashi season 3 should have been ready to serve by now, so why the delay?
Ah! The good old slice of life-cooking anime, we sure love one of these, and in recent times, the fandom around this genre has grown. It may not be your typical shonen action or isekai adventure, but these shows are guaranteed to get you munching.
On today s’ menu, we have Dagashi Kashi, loosely translated as “cheap sweet candy,” a slice of life-gourmet anime written and illustrated by Kotoyama. The plot revolves around a small candy shop run by Shikada Dagashi in the countryside.
He has a son, Kokonotsu Shikada, who does not want to inherit the family business and dreams of becoming a manga artist one day. The scenario changes when Hotaru Shidare enters the frame as she wants Shikada Dagashi back in her family s’ successful company, Shidare Corporation.
Shikada Dagashi initially refuses the offer but agrees to join on one condition; if she can convince his son, Kokonotsu Shikada, to take over the family shop. This starts a chain of events as Hotaru s’ eccentric personality tries to win over the aspiring mangaka. Can she convince him to join his family shop and will Shikada s’ dream come true is the central theme of the show.

DAGASHI KASHI MANGA CATCHUP
Dagashi Kashi manga is written and illustrated by Kotoyama and was serialized in Shogakukan’s shōnen magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday from 25th June 2014 to 11th April 2018. The manga consisted of 11 volumes and was published by Shogakukan on 18th September 2014 and concluded on 18th May 2018.
When we compare the Dagashi Kashi manga to the anime, it isn’t easy to pinpoint how many chapters the first two seasons adapted. This is due to the creators skipping many chapters from the manga for creative liberty. But on a rough estimate, the first two seasons covered almost 125 chapters. You can find the skipped chapters list here.
Although if you are interested in discovering what happened after Dagashi Kashi season 2, you can pick up the manga from Chapter 126 from Volume 8.
There is no lack of source material, with more than 60 chapters still left for anime adaptation. One of the main reasons behind the unlikely renewal for season 3 is the completion of the manga four years back which financially would be a risk for the creators.
Dagashi Kashi manga has sold over 3 million copies as of 2018, with the first two manga volumes selling more than 450,000 copies combined. The sales doubled to 400,000 copies per volume after the anime premiered from 1.6 million in total before the announcement.
Dagashi Kashi ranked #5 on the “Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics” by the Honya Club website in 2016. The series was nominated for the 41st Kodansha Manga Awards in 2017 in the “best shōnen manga” category.
Dagashi Kashi manga is rated 7/10 and ranked #7893 with 18k members on MyAnimeList.

DAGASHI KASHI SEASON 3 HALTED, BUT WHY?
Coming to the meat of the matter, the biggest reason there won’t be a Dagashi Kashi season 3 is that the creators are looking at a different sub-genre for the show.
According to this article on Animemaru, the creators are looking to debut a Dagashi Kashi Hentai instead of adapting the show from the manga. This change in a decision is, of course, taken on financial gain rather than creative thought, which was also backed by this statement from a studio Feel head:
We decided to stop caring about story integrity and give the people what they want, and I mean, come on, this manga is just asking for a hentai adaptation. We’ve already decided to go ahead and start production on the second season. There’s already a lot of excitement for its brewing.
What comes as a surprise is that writer and creator Kotoyama is also entirely in support of this decision as he goes on to say:
I’m ecstatic. This is the direction I wanted to go, but my editor initially talked me out of it. As the kids say, I tried to make a character ‘is pure sex.’ I put her in some lewd scenarios and knew the fans would want more. I mean, come on, the doujins write themselves! I already talked to Feel and gave them my full support. They offered me a job helping them animate their season two telling me, ‘You can get as sick and as lewd as you want. I’m very excited.”
Granted, the article is from 2016, and the studio has released no such explicit show, but reading these statements has confirmed the final nail in the coffin for Dagashi Kashi season 3 in any shape or form.
