One such idol series was privy to the Winter 2023 slate when CloverWorks s’ anime series UniteUp, based on a multimedia project by Sony Music Entertainment Japan hit the small screens.
The story follows Akira Kiyose, who sings on a video streaming site under the singer’s name “KIKUNOYU.”
One day the talent agency sMiLea Production scouts him. sMiLea is an agency founded by the retired legendary idol pair AneLa to train new budding idols.
Akira then forms an idol group with Banri Naoe and Chihiro Isuzugawa, who were also scouted.
Their newgroup, Protostar, will have their debut alongside other new idol groups with sMiLea Production: Legit and Jaxx Jaxx.
Who comes on top or will the dreams of becoming a top idol star get crushed is the central plot of the show.
UniteUp Season one was a relative success however fans who enjoyed the idol anime are wondering if there will be a second installment or not.

UniteUp season one aired from 7th January 2023 to 15th April 2023 for 12 episodes.

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal.
As mentioned earlier, UniteUp season one was received well by the idol fandom however it was not close to the top rated animes of Winter 2023.
Financially, the DVD Vol.1 sold under 600 units and was ranked #3 on Anime DVD Weekly Top 20.
While the reviews and ratings can be considered good enough, a crucial factor for renewal will be the availability of studio and source material.
Studio CloverWorks is a popular production house that has produced series like Fairy Tail, Horimiya, My Dress-Up Darling and Spy x Family.
Currently, the studio has four (Horimiya: The Missing Pieces, Spy × Family Season 2, The Elusive Samurai and Wind Breaker) new projects scheduled as part of its production schedule for 2023 and beyond.
Furthermore, CloverWorks have been in controversies for overworking employees and producing half bake series, so it is unlikely that the studio will renew for a sequel anytime soon.
Also considering UniteUp is an original series production with no manga or light novel to adapt as source material, the chances of UniteUp Season 2 appear further bleak.
